Hardcore gaming is dead forever...

for a simple reason really, now that video games have become a profitable market, there really is no incentive to make a good hardcore game anymore that really pleases an increasingly niche section of gamers. Every year i see less and less hardcore games coming out( i think the last one i played was Vanquish, and that game wasn't very successful. I don't even want to think about FPS). The fact of the matter is, the people who truly care about video games are greatly outnumbered by casuals, and the gap will only increase. Its even making its way into PC, which for a long time was protected from too much casual entry due to it being somewhat expensive, and not completely easy to pick up, but now even it is becoming more accessible and watered down. This is a serious problem guys we need to consider, but there's not much we can do about it. one day everything's going to be a wagglenoobtubenolearningcurve casual fest, and devs are still going to make millions.

Just my opinion though. what do you guys think?

I think you're wrong, mostly for the fact that you seem to have an obscure system for deciding what hardcore games are.

Define "hardcore" please, even though it won't make you any less wrong. Right now you just sound like the people who say PC gaming is dead.

Hardcore gaming has always been dead to me.

As I'm one who believes that gaming is simply gaming, neither casual nor hardcore no matter how much you like to fool yourself otherwise. And in my eyes only those who win money in competitions, like the MLG dudes, can ever call themselves hardcore.

This sounds overblown.
Come to think of it, what counts as a hardcore game? I mean the games I like such as Uncharted and Halo outnumber casual games by large numbers. And no matter what theres always going to be games for ninch crowds. Thats sort of how Atlus exists.

Dark Souls minus guides is a true hardcore experience. At least for an experienced gamer like myself. Also, pretty much any game on the extreme level of difficulty. Masochism is an acquired taste, but need not demand blindness.

well i never really defined what hard core was outside of being difficult, which is pretty vauge.

Imo its really just any game that takes dedication to master, and also rewards you for it(for example not losing to cheese tactics that a casual would use since they don't understand the game very deeply). If you think abuot it, there are very few games like that left. All of them may have the appearance of difficulty, but there's always a simple tactless way to do everything for the sake of attracting casual gamers. Perfect example, gears of war 3(i'm a huge fan of the series, and very talented at the game). the developers admitted that the new double barrelled sawed off shotgun was made to help new comers "have a chance" against veteran players like myself, a far cry from gears of war 1 where i just had to get online and die a lot of times and practice to get good at the game to beat talented players, not pick up some miracle gun and get free kills. And devs do this beause they know with ease to entry, the greater amount of casuals will come and get them more money

First of all,

Second, Hardcore gaming will NEVER die. Never.

Look at Dark Souls. It is truely meant for the hardcore crowd and plenty of people enjoy it. The developers KNEW people would play a game that would beat their innards to mush. It is deep enough for any harcore gamer or RPG player. The game made a good amount of money, as well.

Stop losing faith in the industry, bro. Go get some tea and relax for a while.

OP: So, if I understand correctly, the problem is that games are too affordable and accessible? So games need to be difficult to play and more expensive?

I'm extremely eager to hear about the fabled hardcore games of yore that met these twin goals. If hardcore gaming is "dead", it must have, at one time, "lived", correct?

Another elitist who doesn't want filthy non gamers playing games. Oh and he has 5 posts! Listen to this guy, he's clearly being objective and unbiased about this whole thing!

Dude, get a blog.
don't get me wrong, i have nothing against anyone playing a game, i never said that. what i have a problem with is devs selling out to newcomers like this in order to increase profits. Im not going to go beat down the door of someone because they cheese me in a game, its the devs fault for making the mechanic in the first place.

when I think of "casual" I think games like Bejewled (which is still a good game IMO). the market has games you can explore a world for 100 hours and still not find everything in it, is that not "hardcore" enough for you?

never said that, you guys are missing my point. I'm not saying games need to be a certain way, just making an observation on how the gaming world is changing and how its going to effect us. Granted I'd like them to be a certain way, but thats prety damned self serving.

and hardcore gaming used to exist, well not on purpose i would say, but in a sense that it was back in a time where the market was very narrow, so developers had to really make their games stand out to pull people in.

well, since beating Vanquish on God Hard has only been done by less than 200 people world wide including myself, i consider that pretty hardcore. but that's just me.

And i never said those weren't hard at all did i? no

Hardcore gaming never existed in the first place. It's a word some people made up to... I dunno, feel superior to kids whose first gaming experience was the 360 or something.

I'm not denying there's a difference between people who stroll through easy-mode and guys like speedrunners and others who can play the hell out of a game.

But Hardcore? Hardcore? How can anyone even say that word with a straight face, let alone think it's this precious pinnacle in all that is Gaming. I'd elaborate, but now I've thought about "hardcore" so much, all this giggling makes it difficult to continue typing.

If hardcore=difficult, look no further than Dark Souls for rage inducing difficulty, usually. If you want to be a cheap little *****, go right for it, your enemies will do the exact same thing. Fucking giant rats.
