Has anyone else noticed the drop in standard of the Escapist forums?

This post is directed as much to moderators as to us Escapist civilians, & I'd be genuinely interested to hear anyone's opinion.

As the subject says, over the last year or so the standard of the Escapist forums has taken a distinct turn for the worst. Compared to other public forums, from Steam to the truly mindless slough of YouTube, the Escapist has always firmly enforced its posting rules with rigid moderation. The guidelines can be seen here:

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.116827-These-forums-and-you-Forum-Posting-Guidelines

The posting guide is comprehensive, articulate & specific, covering anything from grammar to advertising. Unfortunately it's becoming more & more apparent that the posting guidelines no longer apply, or that if they do then only arbitrarily. To illustrate this I've given a few paraphrased examples below of what I consider to be the most chronic transgressions against both the guidelines & common decency. However please note that the paraphrasing isn't done for the sake of clarity, but to protect the names of the guilty:

1. Flagrant racism.
E.g. Post after post insists that a particular European country is a nation of cowards, or that a specific American country's citizens are all stupid & fat (both scurrilous accusations); post after post insists that skin colour X is inferior or superior to skin colour Y; etc.
There's a difference between citing official statistics concerning the demographic of a nation (religious or political inclination; economic or educational status; ethnic composition; etc.) & racism. In addition to contravening the forum rules, racism is actually illegal in many countries & yet it seems to be flourishing here at the Escapist.

2. Trolling & Flaming.
Perhaps a more difficult activity to categorically identify, there are hundreds if not thousands of examples of this from 'Aww U sad? Go cry to mom fanboi' to the efficiently economical 'You're an idiot'. What is really staggering is the number of times blatant abuse is hurled around, apparently without consequence. Not simple insults, but much more profound attacks alluding to other posters' & even their families suffering physical hardship, or even trauma from cancer to rape.
As with racism, there's a difference between the citation of empirical evidence to support an argument & simply casting an unsubstantiated aspersion on someone's character.

3. Homophobia.
As with racism, this is an illegal practice in many countries, yet on these forums it would seem to be thriving. Surely there's no need to even demonstrate homophobia with examples, I'm sure we all know it when we see it.

I just wonder what happened to the forums. I'm certain someone will attempt to argue that to prohibit certain posts is censorship of free speech, but bear in mind the difference between free speech & libel, & also consider that in order to join the Escapist & post on these forums we all agreed to abide by the guidelines.

So how can someone be suspended or banned for posting 'First!' but ignored for 'Faggots will burn in Hell' or 'Your mother is a whore'? Is it just me that thinks this is crazy?

Where the hell have you seen the Flagrant Racism and Homophobia? On the incredibly rare occasion I do see it here, the thread gets locked and a ban's put in place pretty quickly.

The only thing I'ved noticed is a drop in grammatical quality and stupid threads by new users. The general quality of the responses by regulars to these thread are of the same quality as they've always been.

I think you may be confusing the Escapist with 4chan. Seriously though, I have seen none of things you speak of except for the occasional troll who is almost immediantly instabanned.

I haven't noticed much change. All that really happened was that the place got bigger. Usually there's a context to how the comments were made, which is why some would get wrathed and some won't.

Plus there's the fact that if you want people to get punished for bad things, then use the report button.

I haven't seen any examples of homophobia, well and serious ones at least. The ones I do see seem to be in a joking manner. Same with people calling other countries "cowards" or whatever.

As for trolling and flaming, well those seem to be the ones many misunderstand. There's a difference between expressing your opinion and straight up trolling. And many people here confuse the two.

Then again I wouldn't be surprised if most of the worst your referring to happen in the religion/politics forum. A place I never go.

I haven't seen much of a drop.

Then again I was recently on vacation so things might have changed while I was away.

I haven't seen open trolling or hate speech anywhere around here without the offender being moderated shortly afterwards. That being said, there is a noticeable drop in quality with a flood of boring and uninspired threads (e.g. "Am I the only one..." threads) but I suppose that's to be expected on any forum that gains a bigger posting audience.

if anything I'm seeing more mature and thoughtful threads lately,
even if a few too many of them are "your avatar is *Blank*" or "the last *Blank* you got in a game is *Blank*"

What forums are you actually looking at? I've not seen any racism, trolling/flaming or any homophobia lately and on the rare occasion I have seen those, they've been pretty much snuffed out and dealt with within 30 minutes or so, at times even quicker.

But to answer your question, no, I haven't really noticed a drop in the quality of the forums. Sure, we might get a few tools come through and get away with whatever offence but 9 times out of 10, they are caught, banned and forgotten about. Simple.

I haven't seen much of that, and when I have, it gets taken out by the mods. I've seen a lot of stupid threads lately though :/

May I point out that racism and homophobia are not illegal? Yes, they may be atrociously stupid, but they are certainly not illegal, and I should hope they will never be made illegal. People have a right to voice their opinion in the public forum (the Escapist is private, so not so much here, but whatever), no matter how stupid that opinion is.

While I have seen a drop, it's largely overshadowed by the exorbitant increase of overall traffic. I've been around a bit longer than the average user, and I can definitively say that the community has changed. I don't know the extent which it has changed, but I do know that it's as not tight-knit as it used to be. Quantifiably explainable because of the aforementioned growth. The Escapist gets dozens of millions of hits a month- quality cannot be preserved on a stable level unless we maintain a high standard which new users must strive to achieve.

Just be glad the old WarCry Network Forum Lords aren't here, this forum would be a very different place.

Well, the site is constantly growing, attracting new members. As far as I know, we can't exactly screen everyone who joins to make sure they adhere to some higher standard. Every site has its bad eggs. Thankfully, they're dealt with fairly quickly here.

You know what I hate more than racism, homophobia, or trolling on the Escapist? The fucking "The last enemy you killed is now..." threads. Seriously, is it the same person who creates every goddamned one of those?
