With the release of the Epic Games store, one of the exclusives is a Souls-like called Ashen. I've read a couple reviews so far and so far they seem to be fairly positive, though all of them say it's very much like Dark Souls. Apparently it's a bit shorter(20ish hours) and a little lighter in tone, but I'm curious if anyone here has played it and what they felt about it.

I am really leaning towards it(I really liked DS and BB, and felt DS2 was a good, if fairly messy game) but I haven't seen that much press on it yet(which kind of surprises me because Souls-likes tend to get a lot of Buzz ie Surge and Nioh).

I've put about 12 hours in so far and am loving it. Grab it and have fun, my dude.
Any serious issues I should look out for or is it pretty much one of those "If you like Souls-type games, you'll be good to go" type of things?

I think its pretty rad, but I am a bit frustrated by a pair of early game things. The first is a little souls-standard so maybe I'm whining for nothing, but the weapon you start with is the best weapon you're gonna get stats wise for at least a few hours. There are plenty of other weapons, and they do have different attack sets and speeds, so you aren't necessarily stuck with a club, but I'm used to the souls games habit of giving you the weapon sets of different starting classes peppered through the first few areas to let you second guess the stuff you started with on even ground. My kingdom for a shortsword or an unbroken axe to try is what I'm saying I guess.

The other thing, is there is a hub world and missions. I dunno how you feel about that, personally I recoiled a bit when I realized what was happening, but it isn't really obtrusive. So far they all sort of point in the same direction and aside from having to walk home to turn in the mission and get the next one, you might not even notice they're happening.

Story-wise, I feel they need to shut up a bit and let me discover the world on my own, but I'm only like 3 hours in so that may just peter off soon.

Oh and you have a bro. There seems to usually be one dude/chick following you around killing stuff with you, depending on the missing you're on. At first I thought that was fucking god damn bullshit because they kept stealing my kills and not letting me really immerse myself into the rush of methodical killing. Buuuut over time they become way less helpful, its pretty much the first "here's how you play the game" section where they step in a bit too much and I'm guessing its just tutorial aid. Update: I've noticed a disturbing habit of my bro disappearing into the far distance (somehow?) and then getting their ass kicked before eventually succumbing before I can give them a tussle of the hair and a slap on the ass to get em going again. Its a little frustrating but ultimately a minor detail given I don't really trust them to help me in the first place.
