Has Halo run its course?

Now they're making a whole new trilogy? And a reboot of the classic CE? That means that Halo will have at least 10 games by the time they're done.

Don't get me wrong, Halo was fun and all but isn't it time to let sleeping dogs lie?

What's the deal with the endless franchise milking in gaming these days?

A new trilogy... jesus fuck. I know it's old news by now, but it still makes me roll my eyes. I guess I'm not surprised though.

But who's to say if it really has run it's course? I think the so-called fans of the series are very open to the idea and would be willing to get the entire new trilogy. Even I have a guilty pleasure of Halo, mainly because I loved the first game so much that I'm doomed to play every other game in the franchise. Here's how I feel about the series: Loved Halo CE, fucking hated Halo 2 and thought it was garbage, thought Halo 3 was mediocre, thought ODST was a cool idea but not executed well, and surprisingly loved Reach. So admittedly, I will be checking out the new Halo games just because they're halo.

I thought the Franchise and the Halo Universe had potential to expand and make another game in another fashion. I would've liked a different Halo game. I'm pretty sick of the Chief by now.

I feel the same way you do about the various games in the franchise.

I love Halo. Yes, I admit, it's a guilty pleasure, but I'm a huge Halo fan. I've read all the books, seen the anime, and read most of the comics. However, ever since Reach came out, it really seems to be losing it's touch. Something about Reach just made it a much worse game than Halo 3, and I just can't put my finger on it. I'll buy Anniversary, of course, and I'll try Halo 4 after the price goes down.

I'm inclined to agree with you on that one, the games certainly were fun but all too often publishers (I'm guessing this idea in particular didn't come from the developpers, seeing that Bungie left the franchise) should know when to not pursue sequels and just let the damn thing end for its own sake. While this doesn't mean that the upcoming sequels will be bad, the fact they're obviously milking the franchise certainly puts a bad taste in the players' mouths.

This is very easy to explain actually, and I shall use a movie quote to do so:

"Perhaps we'll meet again in 'Spaceballs 2: The Quest for More Money'."
Just replace "Spaceballs 2" with the appropriate franchise name and number; do not change the subtitle.

Well in my opinion a game franchise that still sells as many copies that Halo sells hasn't run its course. If people keep buying the games, people still like the games, therefore people want more of it. When people stop buying the games, that's the time to stop making new games.

Yeah I am not a fan of Halo. Ive played the demo of CE, halo 2, 3, tinkered around with the reach beta and spent an hour with halo wars myself. The franchise is ok, Its not a console seller for me personally.

But I am glad to hear that Halo will be returning with a new trilogy, because it is Microsofts flagship title. Without it, it might well mean that the 360 as a platform is dead or dying.

If anything I think the logic behind "halo needs to die because its not bungie any moar" has ran its course and needs to go stop because it is illogical fanboyism at its best.

i'm not calling this until the new halo is out.

the whole purpose of Reach was for mltiplayer madness somethin the aniversary edition of HaloCE will no doubt build on. So maybe 343 industries will take halo in a brave and mature direction (it could happen).

but if they don't series is dead to me.

(and yes its hard being nice about this)

Well yeah, it would be better in my opinion to let the series die, but it would also make much less money. Thus, like everything else, it will be milked until every last penny of profit is taken.

Really, the thing that annoys me the most is Halo: Anniversary. Are we really so shallow as to buy the same game twice, just for a minor graphical update? Halo: CE isn't even old, and it still looks fine. Better than most most games in fact, it has a nice colourful aesthetic. If it makes money (as it no doubt will) I'll be pretty damn annoyed. Why should companies even bother making new games at all, when we're all happy to buy the old ones again?

I can't even blame them for this, it's our fault there's almost no innovation in mainstream games.

Personally I love Halo, but I doubt this trilogy will be as good, I dont think it will be bad, but tired.

Honestly 343 have a really good chance to bring something new to it and If they do then grand, but they proberly wont.

Why in the heck would anyone want a franchise to die? Number 1, its incredibly selfish, considering there are plenty of people who actually enjoy it and want to keep playing. Second, that you'd rather throw something in the garbage than let it develop and see if something good happens is remarkably short-sighted.

I 'll be honest and say we should put a shot in it while it's still sleeping. It would've been the most humane thing.

It's because of this mindset right here.

I've never been a fan of this particular type of shooter. Sure i could have some fun with friends playing the first Halo game, but after that it all just felt like the same game with some minor upgrades.

It's fine they wanted to finish the story with Reach. Unbroken gameplay mechanics imported to a new game with good story is something i will accept, maybe even love, but i really don't get why they had to keep going... (Edited in): ...after that.

Quit while you're ahead, as they say... That's really something i think they should've paid attention to.

I've always loved the Halo franchise and while Bungie may have left 343industries is still made up of people who worked on the other games anyway so it's not really the same as a lot of other studio changes.

I would prefer the franchise to die with dignity rather than see it be bled for every last dime it can produce, but I'll save any actual judgement until I've brought and played Halo 4. They haven't let me down so far, and at least they take a decent amount of time in between each game to make them properly, when the temptation to switch to yearly releases to compete with Call of Duty must have been so great.

Also, nice to know that this website has created such a culture of hostility towards anything mainstream that when a person says they like playing Halo (a popular franchise enjoyed my millions of people round the world for legitimate reasons whether some of you like it or not) they feel like they have to defend themselves by saying it is a "guilty pleasure". Wow, great job guys. Way to make people feel bad about their own personal tastes.

Hehe, a new trilogy... that never goes wrong :D

If they had any decency they would let it be, but there is still plenty of fans to milk so fuck decency it's time to print some money.

Hello. Have +5 internets from me.

I can understand people not liking a franchise, or thinking it has run for too long, or thinking it is too popular for it's own good. But if that is the case how hard is it to just choose not to buy the games and save yourself some money. Talking about how it needs to 'die' whiffs a bit of trying to ruin everybody else's fun.

They don't need to come up with new ideas because the old ones still sell.

Call of Duty keeps churning them out and people buy them so HALO is getting in on the "why change it when we can milk it" action.
