Lets face it, all of have surcomed to hype at one poin. There have been plenty of times where I thought that a game would destroy all opposition to become the best game ever, and when I got it, it just wasn't that great.

BUT, have your ever bought a game, and, because of hype, loved it, and only realized it was crap or medioca when coming back to it or thinking back on it much later?

Gears of War and Halo. Great when you crank it up the first time. Wouldn't want to go through it again though.

I can honestly say, nope, never. Hell, I would like to live under a rock so I could live in peace and not like CoD4.

Thanks to Medal of Honor I am eternally cycnical, so that'd be the one.

Having said that, I buy every Valve release just because it's Valve. At the moment Left 4 dead is making me question that purchase process (Why can I not have a server browser that works and Why don't you understand the difference between Co-op and versus?!).

The thing is, until three years ago, I didn't have much any exposure to the gaming culture in general.
My opinion on games before 2007 are, without a doubt, my own.
Therefore, I get to say, "I love Halo."

Hype is designed to cloud your judgment and without it most games would exist in in a clouded sate sorta like schrodinger's game. A game industry without hype would boast far less in the way of sales mark my words you may mock hype, you may even hate it but without it, well just look at what happened to Tabula Rasa almost no hype at all when it came out. Image an entire game industry like that.

My god yes. Mass Efect. It probaly is a great game, but I just found it dull and too strug out with dialouge.

also without wanting to be stoned from above by all the fanboys out there, i honestly dont like CoD4, or any call of duty for that matter. Now to hide under my desk..

GTA IV and The Force Unleashed, they were both pretty cool till I realized that they weren't what they promised they would be.

You know what, I'm going to add L4D to that list.

I never played Halo 1, but heard so many great things about Halo 2. Once I had the chance to play it, not as good as it sounded. Good, but not the God-given gift to bring world peace. I vowed never to listen to hype again and remain cynical about most upcoming releases, and it has worked well for me.

I thought that Saints Row 2 was going to a really great game, but it lacked the immersion that I feel is necessary to a great game. On another note,

You seriously didn't like CoD4? What was wrong with it?

Force Unleashed. It looked amazing until it was rushed to a release that coincided with the godawful clone wars movie.

I was expecting the world out of Silent Hill Homecoming. Turns out, it's just a not bad game nor the masterpiece of Silent Hill 2.

EDIT: Oh, and Mirror's Edge.

I never buy games on hype. I play games but all hype does is make me hate a game at the time if it isn't fantastic or amazing, like Halo. If anything I warmed up to halo years after it was released in all it's mediocrity.

A great example is Deadspace, which i got on the amazing scores everyone was giving it, and everyone saying how fantastic and scary it was (before the ZP review) and I was so pissed at how it was basically a shitty RE4 in space game. I still can't play it and judge it properly since it pisses me off so much.
