Have Colleges Become "No Adult Zones"?

Every once in a while, I come across an article that makes me say "I don't want to live in this world anymore." (Scarily enough, that reaction is happening more often.) The example of what caused that reaction today is this article: http://newbrunswicktoday.com/article/rutgers-sponsored-tailgate-party-permanently-shut-down-after-2-games

Yep. You read that right. An adult had a drink with students at a football tailgate party. It's being called an "Incident". Thus, Rutgers University is shutting down the tailgate party area. The reason given is "due to safety concerns".

There have been plenty of examples to justify complaining about how students behave at colleges. I think it's time we should focus some of the ire on college and university administrators who keep insisting that students should be treated like a baby. It's suppose to be a place where young adults learn skills that they will need in the real world, not safe spaces. Definitely not to protect them from having a beer with someone older than they are.

Yeah, make room for two on that boat. People in media seem oddly obsessed with college campuses right about now.

So what range is considered adult?

18+
or
30+
or
..?

Because I am in college at 23. Am I considered too adult?
Aren't all students in college usually considered adults?

I don't understand.

Wait a second, how do you shut down an "alley." Are they gonna quickly build a Taco Bell over it? ?

Well I think its a fallacy to assume that just because someone is an adult that makes them mature. College Campuses are becoming more sterile and conformative, sure. Free expression is being stamped down upon, and that's coming from a Mizzou Grad.
But you remember those Mizzou protests? We had adult teachers calling for students to assault the press, or to demand people leave because they weren't wanted at the school anymore. Adults mind you.

Just not mature ones.

Is this a US-only thing? It sounds like a US thing.

Personally I'm 28 right now. I spent nine solid years across three qualifications at University up to the age of 27. AND I'm going back this year to do a language course in my free time as part of a continuing learning program, so I'm officially a registered student again with a student card and all the rest of it. With encouraging letters about 'getting involved in student life and student societies' at the University.

Hell, when I was doing my undergraduate degree we had a couple of women in their late thirties/early forties and a guy who I'm pretty sure was over 50 on the same course. Mature students make up a small but noticeable proportion of the University population over here.

This sounds like this is happening cuz colleges don't want bad publicity for a rape or drunk driving

*Snerk* She learned nothing.

OT: I'm part of an anime club at my old university despite graduating some years ago. No frigging incidents. Granted, I haven't gotten drunk, but somehow I get the feeling that wouldn't matter.

I've got absolutely no fucking idea what this is even about. Some guy had a beer? A teacher had a beer? There were - I guess there were other people around?

What the shit is this even.

Edit: And how do you shut down a tailgate party to begin with? You can hold them anywhere where cars are parked! That is the whole point of a tailgate party.

Ah yes, the alienating nature of Fast Food service work. Clearly, this is the social ideal.

And seriously, I've worked in a kitchen, it did not help me work with my anxiety. It taught me all the worst ways to just bury it, deep, deep down, and feed off of my high stress levels to work harder by torturing myself for every mistake I made. Then I went home and hid in my room for hours until my nerves calmed to the point that I could human again, at which point I'd eat two things of Graham crackers and go to sleep. What a great way to handle stress. So good. So healthy.

The proper way to deal with anxiety is not to just dwell in it like some kind of crazy person. That will fucking kill you. If you have an issue with anxiety, find somebody else, get their help. You are not reacting correctly and need someone else's input, someone else's help.

PragerU is shit. I have no problem with you for posting it or anything, I just really hate that channel.

I do too, and I've watched a number of their videos for essentially that reason. They still piss me off every time I watch one of their videos. Goddamn do I hate that channel.

Yeah, make room for two on that boat. People in media seem oddly obsessed with college campuses right about now.
When college kids stop misusing the term "Safe Spaces", I am pretty sure people will stop being "obsessed" with college campuses.

Would help if the phrase "safe space" hadnt been corrupted by both sides.

It used to mean a place where you could for example, be open about being gay or trans without having people telling you to burn in hell for being an abomination. Doesnt mean a discussion on LGBT and religion couldnt be had, but it would not be hostile. I used to go to a place for LGBT youth that was a proper safe space, since it allowed young LGBT people and straight allies a place to not be condemned for who they are, even from their own families. It was nice to know I could go there wearing make up and a dress and not be beaten up for it. THATS a safe space.

Maybe everyone else should go first. They're the ones simplifying it into no free speech allowed.

That sounds like a positive thing that no one would have a problem with.

However, "safe spaces" goes back further than that. I think Alcoholics Anonymous would be considered one of the first "safe spaces".

It was just a personal example. Really, a safe space shouldnt be about hiding from problems, but a place to constructively deal with them. Whether thats a place for LGBT teens to understand themselves, or a place for people with drug or alcohol problems to resolve and deal with them. It shouldnt be a world of bubble wrap and cushioning, nor should they be destroyed cause some people dont like that they are why safe spaces exist in the first place and just want to tear people they dont like down.
