Have games ever helped you get over something that was bothering you? For me, I was really pissed off earlier today, so I played LittleBigPlanet (Correction: I played InFamous as full evil, blowing up cars and zapping people, THEN played LBP), which cheered me right up. Has this ever happened to you?

games are my zen place.
people ask why I play them so much, and why I am so focused in them.
they have asked why I play them at times when I should not feel like playing them(like after my uncles/grandpas funeral)
it is because I can set my mind free in them.
the controls for the games have been laid before me, so my body can take the controller and play them easily without my mind.
my mind is free to wander the deeper maginations in my mind that are enigmatic to my abilities as a person when I try to think normally.
I am at peace in my mind, and my body is content with playing his video game.

the only problem with that is that sometimes ill be the mind, and other times the body.
so that means ill wake up from my comotose state and fall down because Ive forgotten Im in control and dont balance right away.
or other times ill just feel a sudden jerk then have wierd ideas about life suddenly pop into my head.

truthfuly, games have helped me escape the real world, which at the time sucked balls. They allowed me to fixate my focus upon something that didn't require me to think about how i was depressed and suicidal, much better now, and i have games to thank for keeping me off my own subject until i figured it out lol.

Killing people in games keeps me from going ballistic on them in real life. The stupidity of some people just gets me to the point where I want to throttle them, but instead I just go and play some prototype. Killing a island of civilians is a great way to relieve my anger.
Um well this

Cheering me up, keeping my mind off a current stream of minor constipation, keeping my mind off various other things, and even the Tetris effect has helped me. At one point, I had been playing only TF2 on my computer for about 2 months. I was SO observant at the end of that, I noticed practically everything...

I hate to sound like a broken record(there is alot of white noise involved) but MAYBE if the parents stopped complaining about the games and used that time to explin to there kids why this is just a game, then we wouldnt have most of the problems we have now.
or just beat your kids when they get stupid, whatever works^_^

Definitely, all the time. Not only in the sense of escaping or cheering me up, but I've met a lot of people through games and it's great to have something common to talk about when you want to get in touch with lost acquaintances or old friends, too.

Staving off long-term boredom & potential depression. I suspect video games are like a godsend when the economy is down, you're booted out of school for financial reasons, & no one is hiring.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To make a short story long:

Lessee.....I was employed in my first job ever & in an online college. I had job security because my mom was in a hard-to-replace position that required months of training & mind-numbing math skills & she said she'd quit if I was fired.

Well security be damned! The economy took a nosedive, hitting the car industry very hard, & we were ALL out of a job. My mom got an even better job in a week's time, but my inexperienced self had to compete with everyone else.

As many of you know, even the shittiest places you can try to get a job at aren't hiring; they're just firing.

My school-funder people (Sallie Mae) decided to revoke my funds & I was kicked out of school. On top of that, those bastards call 6 times a day, 7 days a week (no joke) to basically say "I know you didn't have the money to pay us back 5 minutes ago, but do you have it now? How about now?"

TV & movies have been a shit stew since 1999, so all I have is video games & books & comics.

Games over the years have definitely helped me. They've provided a gateway away from many of the problems that would have otherwise severely stressed me out or have cause a problem between me and family or friends. From the simplest games on a phone or gameboy to MMO's and FPS's, they've all had their own places in my stress relief.

In short: Video Games kick ass.

Besides the obvious answer of using them to escape reality for a couple wonderful hours a day... i've got nothing

They've helped me find inspiration to study. I love all sorts of sci-fi games, like Star Wars, Mass Effect, Resident Evil, you name it. Resident Evil was actually the reason to why I started studying Biochemistry. Heh, I figured I'd get to do all sorts of wierd stuff with bacteria. Turns out it wasn't really my thing after all, so I'm changing majors to something I'd translate into Technical Chemistry.

I'm the kind of person that needs purpose to do something, and I've always had trouble finding that purpose. Sure, what I see in gaming is (mostly) fiction, but nonetheless it helps me see the end instead of making my studies seem like endless calculations that never go anywhere.

Honestly, I'll go try to make up a riff on my guitar and maybe write a song. But, generally I use a game to blow off steam. Of course, doesn't help if the game frustrates me because I have to get a particular trophy involving split timing and I just fail over and over. -.-

That pretty much sums up the Dead Space trophy for "Don't get too Cocky Kid," "Kamikaze" in Heavy Rain, and well, Titan Mode for God of War III.

Oh yes. Video games have redirected my passion for storytelling and revealed what my passion truly is. My life's course has changed a lot based on my current objective to make a difference with the idea that video games are a powerful interactive storytelling medium.

Have Games Ever Helped me?

Well yea, in more than one way. Sure were a great place for me to get my head out of depressed mode and the effect would last right up until i remembered how much i hated my life. I wasn't emo by the way i just had depression.

They've given me a sense of accomplishment at times, and uncontrollable rage at others.

They've taught me history and the importance of imagination. Seriously, you guys remember how terrible graphics used to be, but when i think back to those old games they are crisp and clean in my mind.

Most of all they gave me an outlet to be social when i was constantly moving around.

Games are great.
