Last night I was playing Red Dead Redemption with some friends on multiplayer. Well, toward the end, a player came in and it immediately became clear they were cheating. We couldn't kill them no matter what we tried (even shooting them three times with a cannon) and she was able to pretty much one-shot us. So of course we voted to kick her, but in that game I guess you need 8 votes to kick someone.

Anyway, we got to seven votes and I guess that pissed her off becuse she shot me with something and my xbox immediately froze and crashed. It happened to the other members of my party that were in the area. Before the screen turned black, I noticed that I had been killed from over 27 BILLION (with a B) yards.

Now that pissed me off for a whole variety of reasons, the most of which whatever modded gun she was using could crash people's systems. I mean, cheating is one thing. It just gives you an advantage in the game but doesn't do any more than that. But to actively crash people's hardware?

I'm sorry but that is just absolutely disgusting to me. I did a Google search and apparently it's a pretty common problem in Rockstar games and some people even continue to have problems with their Xboxes afterward. How can Microsoft and Rockstar allow that? We are literally talking about ruining a reasonably expensive piece of equipment. And yes, I did file a cheating complaint and set her as an avoided player, but beyond that Microsoft doesn't really have any other recourse which to me is asinine. That player is an active threat to the RDR community.

I'm afraid to play that game now because I can't afford to just replace my Xbox because some douchefuck thought it would be funny to ruin it. How is that different from someone walking into your house and throwing your system on the floor?

Edit: It just happened again. Someone dropped into the match and froze everything up. I can't believe this is a thing. Online trolls are some of the worst types of human beings in my opinion. Hopefully my XBox doesn't suffer anymore.

Damn, that blows hard. Not much you can do but become an anti-multiplayer gamer or starting a petition and bitching until something happens.
I know I stopped playing CoDs and rockstar games online because of crap like that.

As far back as I can remember I don't think I've encountered a similar situation. The closest would be in Dark Souls, where sometimes if a person entered my game everything would slow to a crawl. At first I thought it was just standard lag, but I noticed that my game would be perfectly fine and works fine online UP UNTIL the person comes in, in which all of a sudden it's as if I'm just looking at screenshots, with audio clearly going on in the background, and things only resuming until I get killed. It hasn't happened often, and hasn't happened for a while, but it was one of those things that made me evaluate whether an online component is even necessary at this point. It's not modding, rather what I think is happening is that the invader has a large item downloading in the background that somehow affects the connectivity (at least, that seems to be what many members of the different wiki's have reported as being the issue)

Many eons ago, the mere act of installing Heroes of Might & Magi 3 on my computer crashed the system. Still have no clue how it wiped my drive.

I've been in matches where it was obvious that the other guy was using something to cheat, be it a simple lag switch or an actual mod. I've not, however, been in anything where someone purposely crashed the game.[sub](I've seen two occasions where a friend accidentally crashed the game, but that's not important here)[/sub] I personally believe that if you should only use a mod if it affects everyone in the match and it actually makes it fun to play. Unfortunately it is extremely rare that you see that because some people are nothing short of blights on the Earth. Honestly though, if you feel the need to use something to cheat in a game or otherwise give you an edge over others you don't deserve to play games with other people nor play games at all. It's too bad Microsoft probably wont ever do anything unless they get like a thousand complaints on the same person and even then the person is probably smart enough to know exactly how to get around a ban.

One thing that's just as annoying as a mod though is a built in feature in a game that is cheap as all hell. Perfect example: in Modern Warfare 3 there is a thing right now where if you put a thermal sight on one of the LMGs it has zero bullet spread, this basically makes it like a laser pointer. This is an actual feature that has not been patched. Fortunately I haven't see but a few people abusing it.

me and 3 friends in MW2 got pushed to a hacked server and we got killed, upon quitting and starting anew, we noticed everything gone, titles, emblems, gun upgrades, we couldn't even level the guns they were minus so much that it would take years prob just to get the sight unlock. Contacted IW and was advised "they are not responsible for online actions of other players" which of course we all stopped playing. I gave them a 2nd chance with MW3 and haven't had that happen again. 2 nights ago thou, 1 guy joined in halfway through a team death match, did 31-0. I threw C4 into a room on him and he didn't die, I watched the replay and it exploded in his face, no more than a guns length away, mid air too, he killed me after, his screen no splash damage or any blood indicators. I watched my c4 blow up in his face like nothing. I reported online and everything.

Your avatar can't be an atari 2600 game, there's no colorful explosion when she dies.

OT: The worst I've ever seen is TF2 on the PS3. It's like they stopped caring. People can put up invisible walls outside your base, become totally bulletproof, freeze your system on command... It's a nightmare.

Has happened once, a custom map in warcraft 3. Think it was actually built into the map, I remember they went -crash color and it, well, crashed for them. Only crashed the game though, computer itself was fine.

Only time it was apparent that it was the case for me, had a suspicious crash or two, but could be a coincidence.

Honestly as a one-time thing I was kind of impressed more then pissed off, although I imagine that would swiftly turn to anger if it happened more often, or caused actual problems with my computer.

The fact they wouldnt fix the MW2 thing is unacceptable. I'm glad IW has new management.

I have no stories of my own other than general script kiddies in MW2 (among other games).
But damn, people can actually go too such lengths as to erase/corrupt your data in a game? How low can you go? What could you possibly accomplish doing that?

Playing against super hackers in The War Z (yes, I know it's shit, fml) is like a thug trying to kill Superman with an ordinary weapon. The fucker can fly, see through walls and is immortal.

Every game of GTA IV on Xbox. You stay online for any more than an hour, you're bound to get a cheater. They have crashed my system a few times, but they even spawn items on you so you can't use your weapons, then they hunt you down.
Don't even get me started on PC. EVERYONE has a trainer on PC.

This is why I'm glad most PC games have community run servers.
Oh this guy is quite clearly cheating? BANHAMMERED.
This guy's spewing offensive crap into chat and/or over his mic and refuses to stop? BANHAMMERED.
This guy's had a bad day and is being rude? Have a kick, come back later when you're feeling better and not acting like a douche.

I hate playing online on consoles, mostly because there's no one to ensure things are civil. It's also why I hate MW2, MW3 and BO2 because the first two use matchmaking leading to horribly laggy games, and the other has servers with no admins and no server browser. It's ridiculous!

My friend was playing Dayz and a hacker blew up the world or something, that froze his PC but he just restarted it ofc.

I don't think I have ever come across that sort of thing myself. I used to play PVK mod and some guy claimed he could do all sorts of shit to my and my friend, he was blatantly hacking in game, as he had a bow on a class and team which at the time had no long range weapons...

As I completely abandoned XBOX and XBOX live years back, I am not entirely up to date. I don't even know if taking care of the server-side security is Microsoft's or Rockstar's job.

All I remember concerning RDR is that if you saw someone use the War Horse online, it was a sure symptom of their game (and intentions) not being kosher.

Thing is, this is the flip side of jailbreaking and userland mods. These individuals totally ruin it for everybody, and they are quite eager to displease you, ruin your day and follow you around. I am not sure it's of much use, but I'd certainly want to make sure to kick, ban and report them.

I am pretty certain they can't damage your system. If you get these lockups only with specific games, and only in obvious hack-related situations, it's because they mess with the game code in a way that your instance of the game gives up on calculating infinity. If you get these errors more and more, it might be a - probably heat-related - issue with your hardware. Dust is not your friend.
