I just started a different thread talking about getting emotionally attached to fiction and thought this would be a good topic of discussion. What games if any have made you cry in the past?

For me:

- Metal Gear Solid
- Final Fantasy 7
- Mass Effect 2

I'm positive there were many more because I can be weirdly emotional at times, but I can't think of any more off the top of my head right now!

Honestly? Yes. As a teenager I was a stone cold emotionless dick that wouldn't even cry at the ending of Titanic, but as I've gotten older I've also gotten considerably more sappy, go figure.

The only game that immediately comes to mind as having left me a soppy mess was Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. Otherwise there's Walking Dead season 1 which definitely had me all teary-eyed and the endings for Transistor and Bastion which both definitely got a little bit of a reaction out of me, especially as the credits started to roll in both cases.

Teared up during Baldur's Gate 2 (Keldon's coda), Planescape Torment, Bastion, The Walking Dead, and various points during the Mass Effect series.

Openly wept during To The Moon.

Only two come to mind. The Walking Dead: Season One. The scene at the train and the end always get to me. The build-up, the execution, the emotion, pretty much everything. Make me cry at those scenes.

Beleive it or not, the ending of Mass Effect 3 tends to get me as well. The music, the flash-backs, and a little personal value.[footnote]Seeing a series you love finally come to a close[/footnote] Get me most of the time.

Well there was Deus Ex Invisible War but I don't think that's the type of crying you meant :p

In all seriousness there have some games that have got some of a emotional reaction out of me;

Choked up: Transistor. Just one word was enough.
Misty eyed: The Blackwell Epiphany. Bittersweet end to a series I had grown to love.
There is something in my eye: The Walking Dead Season 1. Had an idea of how it was going to go down but still was very moving.
Single Tear: Shadow of the Colossus. Argo...
Emotional wreck: To The Moon. Seriously my eyes where red raw from that one. One note of the soundtrack is enough to get me going again. Damn you Freebird Games.

Metal Gear Solid 3, "Debriefing". I gave up my manliness with that ending and I make no apologies for it.

Yes. The Walking Dead Season 1. Twice at least. Great game, but season 2 didn't have the sa,e emotional pull on me though.

The ending of Professor Layton and the Unwound Future was the first game that made me truly cry. And before that I had played through the Walking Dead Season 1. THAT'S how much that game moved me, god damn. What an ending. Further explanation in the spoiler box there for those who haven't played.

I think what really got to me was just seeing Professor Layton vulnerable like that. Until that point, in all the other games he had kept his cool. No matter what happened he never really despaired or got emotional. But in that ending he just broke down, and seeing a character that was such a pillar of calm and composure drop all of that and cry and shout was really touching to me. I'm glad they went there with his character, even though the ending is still really tragic.

I also welled up a bit at the end of Azran Legacy, but it was Unwound Future that really got the tears rolling.

No but a sense of sharing the characters regrets, frustrations, and let downs? Yes.

- Ashley meeting Shepard while working for Cerberus. * Still pisses me off*

- In first play through of ME2, without me knowing about loyalty missions and such, I lost Tali in the evacuation of the collector base and I actually had my Shepard romance her. Ouch!

- This is an old one. Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger. When the Kilrathi pilot kills one of your squadron mates, the one whom particularly hated Kilrathi the most for the deaths of her family. Not Cool! Was right in the seat with Colonel Blair!

- Master Chief and Cortana. * Yeah try to keep your machismo!*

Honorable Mention:

Otocon and Naomi Hunter

Solidus Snake's fate

Fortune's back story --- and fate.

And if you just want to feel as if your going to leap off of a 10 story building ( For Sh--s and Giggles)

Full Metal Alchemist - the fate of Nina Tucker * WARNING -- this is seriously tragic, if you are a cry-bot...you'll need 7 boxes of Tissue.

Just about anything to do with Wolf's Rain. Tough..tough...

Battle Angel OVA - Ahh... the last part... and what happens to Chiren.

KH 358/2 Days: That cheesy line about ice cream actually got me, and I am usually the first to call out cheese!

Walking Dead Season 1: Several times I had things that made me emote, but the ending always got me.

Out of frustration, yes when younger.

Storyline, no but a few have made me a bit sad and even slightly depressed.

To the Moon. If you've played it, you know the part I'm talking about near the end. It may have not been much of a game but damn was it a moving experience.

Can't remember if I cried, but the finale of Walking Dead: Season 1 was really hard to watch.

Metal Gear Solid is the very first game that made me cry, Metal Gear Solid 2 (quite a few times), Okami (TEH FEELS), then The Walking Dead (all of it) and recently Final Fantasy VII (no, not THAT part, but actually Nanaki's backstory).

Also Chrono Trigger made me get a bit depressed when I found out it was my fault Lucca's mother is in a wheelchair :(

Dragon Age: Origins: Once. Ending.

My Warden died.

The Walking Dead: Season One: Once. Again, ending.

Clem shot Lee.

Halo 4. Once more, ending.

CORTANAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!

And Mass Effect 3 yet holds the record at seven times in one playthrough:

Mordin's death, Grunt's almost-death, Legion's death, Thane's death, Anderson's death, Shepard's death, and Liara showing me the Time Capsule (Another record: only time I've ever cried due to a heartwarming feeling)

If there's been another, I can't remember.

I've never actually CRIED because of a game, but one game did come dangerously close: Persona 4.

The ending... was weirdly emotional for me. Having to say goodbye to all those characters whom I had grown so attached to... I've never had that reaction to a game before.

The only thing that even kinda qualifies for a second place is Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days. That final boss. You know the one.

Out and out cry? I don't recall any off hand. Get teary eyed and/or misty? Absolutely. The Dragon Age and Mass Effect games at various parts, the Final Fantasy series for sure (4,6,7,8,10) as well as other Square classics. Heck, I may be a soft touch, but even stuff like some of the moments in the Gears of War and Halo games got to me.
