Have you ever played a really recent game that is just so great it tops your old favorites?

The Witcher, great game.
It's now at my top three rpg list.
Same here.

I've had this experience with Dark Forces, Deus Ex, Unreal, Arcanum, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl though, over the years.

I didn't get a chance to play Fallout until 1999, or Planescape Torment until 2003(?), so those are off the list of potentials. :(

Starcraft 2, I finally got into the beta after three years (I pre-ordered at gamestop when it first became avaliable three years ago), and holy fucking shit it blew my mind. It decimated all of my other RTS favorites, warcraft 3 beaten, original starcraft beaten, Dawn of war one and two beaten, the list goes on. It was worth every day of the wait and for that it earned the spot at the top of my rankings list.
Wait... better than DoW?

Sorry about the double post.

There are not many games that can beat the old classics you played when you were young, because they have to do something really special to match that same sense of discovery and newness that your first years of gaming had.
I think Uncharted 2 came pretty close to giving me that "wow" feeling again because despite its linearity it had you playing out things that are usually reserved for cut-scenes.

Did it bump anything of my top games list? No, nothing could bump the oldies off my list. I wear my nostalgia glasses proudly.

Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect 2 kind of redefined the RPG Genre for me, not that they really did anything revolutionary, but they were firsts for me. They didn't really replace my old favourites though. Yes and no.

Monster Hunter Tri is quelling my reoccurring desire to start yet ANOTHER Diablo2:LoD account. Honestly I have been off and on with that game since '98. Way too addicting!

But now I can kick the habit!

I recently have just finished Heavy Rain and it really hit me on some scenes. I actually had to take a break and walk around the house before actually going through with it. It got in my head sometimes. ^^

Left 4 Dead 2 knocked Space Channel 5: Part 2 out of my Top 10 favourite games list.

(Filling the obscure game quota for today.)

Dragon Age jumped into my top five within a few hours of playing. I still want more DLC for it. God of War 3 is there, but that's really under the title of the trilogy. InFamous and Prototype are some of the most accommodating for dicking around I've ever had. New Super Mario Bros Wii replaced Super Mario World. SM Galaxy replaced SM64. Though there's still some old favorites amongst them that haven't (and probably can't) be replaced.
