He will spend his days drinking your milkshake:

Thanks for the memories Daniel, enjoy your retirement.

Good on him, though apparently he's starring in one last movie (directed by Paul Thomas Anderson again) before his retirement:

I will never understand "retiring" from a creative job with undefined work hours. I mean, you could just...not take any jobs until you want to. Its not like a job where you always have a schedule. And then if you get the itch to do something, you have to "come out of retiring"...just take a break. If it lasts a year, a decade, or till death, why make it so "final" as "retiring".

I would say it's more for the benefit of studios, so they know not to bother the guy about prospective roles.

There is another thread asking who you hate that everybody love. I don't hate Daniel Day-Lewis. I do think he is really over-rated. He is a hammy over-the-top actor who gets credit for chewing the scenery. While the same critics and fans will criticize another actor for doing the same thing. I don't get it. I don't feel bad about him retiring.

I love hammy over the top acting actors because they give off the most memorable performance.

I thought that was done through an agent. That studios don't call actors directly. Just fire your agent then.
That's probably what retiring means. Stop employing your agent and keeping out of the spotlight.

With older actors if they stop making movies without announcing their retirement everybody starts speculating about their mental/physical health. Nicholson never announced his retirement but because he hasn't made a movie in 7 years the media keeps speculating why. Gene Hackman on the other hand announced his retirement, so nobody bothers him. He's effectively off the grid.

I'd presume it's also a great way of baiting execs into shelling out more for you to "come out of retirement".
