Having second thoughts about a cosplay idea. Advice and opinions would be appreciated,

With a local convention just around the corner, I got the idea in my head to try cosplaying for the first time. It sounds like a lot of fun and a good way to meet new people. Since I've been watching Soul Eater fairly religiously lately, I've had my heart set on playing (winces at potential ridicule) Crona, who I feel a certain kinship towards. But after doing some poking around the internet I've ran into a couple of things that disheartened me with the whole project.
1: I'm a guy, and not only do many Soul Eater fans consider Crona a girl(the character has never been given an official gender), but 95% of the people who cosplay him/her are girls. I know I shouldn't be overly concerned about what others have done, and I know guys crossdress for things like this, but that's not my cup of tea. I don't want to be a laughingstock.
2: I have no skills or desire to make the costume, and was going to buy everything. But now I've learned that bought costumes aren't judged at the con's masquerade, and that a lot of people consider them as bad taste.
So now I don't know what to do. I'm open to any thoughts or suggestions.

Could you go to the convention without cosplaying at all? I see your main objectives are to have fun and meet new people. You don't really need to dress up to achieve'em both. You'll be in a place where quite everyone will share the same interests as you so it won't be that hard to have fun and what not.
Buuut if you still insist...

1- If you do not feel confortable with it, then choose another character. I would suppose one of the points is to feel good about yourself. If you can do that, then nothing else should matter.

2- If you do want to enter the constest, then not much you can do. Maybe find a good friend who can sew for you, who knows?
If a lot of people consider them bad, again, why should it matter? Will you feel good about yourself? Then screw them.
