Wondering how long it normal take to get good cards/a good deck. Almost everyone I play against have much better decks in my rank (legendary cards and such. Just wondering if its worth playing as a person who don't want to spend money Or do i have to spend real money to get good cards?

I had a friend who complained that the game was unfair and pay to win. He let me borrow his account and I got him from rank 25 to rank 14 in a few hours (Beyond rank 15 is considered better than 75% of the playerbase according to Blizzard).

The basic cards are good with a few exceptions (Crocolisk and Booty Bay Bodyguard come to mind). Generally you just have to know which of the basic cards are worthwhile to build a deck around them. For instance, Boulderfist Ogre and Chillwind Yeti are amazing cards because they have almost perfect stats for their mana cost (Yeti's 4 attack lets it remove many minions, but the 5 health puts it out of range for many removals like Shadowbolt or Flametongue Cannon for instance).

There are people who've streamed getting to Legend with a basic deck. So yeah.

My advice is to get a couple GVG packs and then just focus on classic for a while. You'll definitely want to finish Curse of Naxxramas as soon as possible but you need a few expert cards to be able to complete it. If you're willing to spend any money at all, I'd suggest just buying Curse outright to save your gold for packs.

If you want personalized coaching or something, you could send me a PM and I'll give you a teamspeak address where I and a few Legend players hang out.

Getting started is definatly tougher due to less choice in deckbuilding, but as mentioned there are plenty of great quality cards to choose from and the legendary ones are very situational so i wouldnt worry about it too much to begin with, i would also sugest picking just one class to start off with as playing each class unlocks unique cards for them giving you greater flexibilty in deckbuilding.

I would disagree with rushing the naxxramas adventure though, the cards are pretty good but not essential, deciding wether or not the game is for you first before spening money or the very high gold entry fee to access it seems a little smarter.

*Edit*

As with all TCG's though if your not paying for cards regularly then building the 'perfect' deck can take a long time. I played on and off since the beta and im still missing a huge swathe of cards from all the classes and neutral decks. I havent bought any packs with real money, and i spent all my early game gold going into the arena which is probably why im a little behind the curve, but with the cards i do have i can still make pretty comprable decks that are fun to play with even if i dont win constantly.

As a side note i avoid ranked because for me it is less fun to play when all your opponents use the same 'netdeck' builds constantly.

Shit really? I'm better than I thought I was since I jump around 15 and 14 regularly. My non-meta Mage and Priest decks have the last laugh after all.

OT: The only money I ever spent on Hearthstone is one lot of 15 packs. My advice is to find 2 classes you like then disenchant every single class card for those classes you don't use. All of my Legendaries have been crafted using this method aside from Ysera who I got in a pack. Slyvanas, Deathwing, Alextraza and Leeroy.

I'm trying out Mill Druid (the card burn one) since the idea of killing the guy by making him overdraw is very amusing to me. Let me tell you, Deathwing is fucking broken in that deck. Tree of Life > Deathwing has never not won me a game no matter how fucked the board is. It is an expensive deck in a way though, Tree of Life is an Epic and I find it to be mandatory since 2 Antique Healbots aren't even enough.

It's not exactly a good deck since giving the current rush meta free cards can backfire badly but it's fun as hell. Also Deathlords. Deathlords are great.

Constructed is a net-decker paradise, where you will generally face one of about a half dozen net decks 75-80% of the time, all the same, right down to the last card. If you're a very good player and make intelligent trades, get good hands, and play your curve correctly, you can take fine-tuned vanilla decks fairly deep into constructed, but you'll likely eventually end up getting shredded.

Generally I stick to playing Arena, and use constructed primarily as a means of getting stubborn quests done. Naturally there is a cost involved in that, so I'd do some reading/watching on recommended Arena drafting first.

Tough to say. I've never had to put any money towards the game, and I have some semi-respectable decks, but I've been playing since before any expansions came out. When Naxx hit, I already had some gold stored up and I was able to unlock the quarters as they were released. If you're starting the game today, you've got three different avenues of progression: classic cards, GvG cards and Naxx quarters, and you're probably going to want something from each. So it's getting harder to catch up as time goes on.

I think if you are going to spend any money, then Naxx is the way to go. It's kind of interesting that the meta seems to be shifting a little bit away from the GvG cards in some respect. There's the highly annoying Mech Mage of course, which is *everywhere* on the ladder right now. But if you look at some of the long-term staples like Handlock and Ramp Druid, they've started reverting to versions which are pretty similar to the pre-GvG variants. Usually just a couple of cards difference, say Antique Healbot and Dr. Balanced. I was watching Trump play some Ramp Druid the other day, and he wasn't using a single GvG card in the deck. By comparison, I can't think of any currently competitive decks that don't use any Naxx cards.

Havent played in a while since before the expansions actually because I hated the grind and I found the mechanics to simple to make truly interesting decks but while you can have success with basic cards the fact is the more cards you have the better your options and the more adaptable you are if you dont pay you will get cards very slowly unless you are very good and lucky in arena and can keep winning it over and over and over again to grind out that way.

You dont HAVE to spend money to get good cards BUT the game is structured to make you either spend/waste (depending on how you look at it) a lot of time or a lot of money to get a good pool of them, personally I did not feel like doing either and deleted it. I did have fun with it for a week or two before the grind set in.

When does it get fun? I lost 15 times and one once, when I won i never got gold so that felt like a hollow victory :\

What you mention is a major flaw of the game, which many people on Blizzard's forums bring up. There's nothing to fallback on, so everyone is forced to be competitive all the time, which heavily promotes netdecking.

Like I said, if you want help making a deck, there's a place where you can get that, but as for when it gets fun... I find fun in running stupid gimmick decks that are hilarious when they get pulled off, like full RNG decks, or a trolly 'STEAL EVERYTHING' Priest with Brewmasters and Recombobulators to keep the stuff you steal. It's all in what you're looking to get out of it.

Getting good cards is all lucky though. You could buy 70 packs and never get a legendary. Someone I just invited to the game, Ashero, managed to get a legendary on his second ever pack (Bloodmage Thalnos).
