Having recently overworked my current collection of games and am now looking for a certain style of game, but have no idea if one even exists
I am looking for a game where you can control a squad of men (Ghost recon style), can outfit them with various items of kit and give detailed and specific orders.(Such as: Sniper, take out guy on turret, everyone else, weapons free)
I would also like it to take place in a Kind RPG/Sandbox setting, where you have a large open world where you just travel around, accepting missions and lying ambushes for things.
Which kin of eliminates games such as Ghost recon and Arm A.

So do i ask the impossible and such gmae exists, or do you have anything in mind?
Even if it contains only a few of the above elements mention it anyway and i will look it up
Thanks in advance.

Full Spectrum Warrioir fulfills some of the criteria.

As squad leader, players coordinate the actions of multiple infantry fire teams, leading them through a variety of hostile environments. An intuitive control scheme allows direction of squads in real-time as players outthink, outmaneuver and outgun enemies through...

Got quite ok-reviews:

Mass Effect maybe?

RPG, pretty close to free-roaming. You have your main character plus your choice of two of your allies. You decide their equipment. You can order them to a certain extend - when to use skills, stay behind, defensive, go ahead that kind of thing.

Even if it's not exactly what you're after it's still a damn fine game. The sequel is coming out early next year too.

It is a dam fine game, one that i have played to death. The same applies to the Warcraft frozen throne Bonus single player game.
Been done i am afraid.

Commandos and Hidden and Dangerous both had the 'command' aspects. Though they're kind of old if that matters to you.

The hidden and dangerous games fit your requeirments (i misspelled that did'nt i?)
the first one from 1999 is free to download and the sequel is cheap but kind of hard to get.
H&D2 has the same graphics standard as the first Call of Duty, but you can shoot through wood and stuff CoD 4 style.
you are allowed to kit out 4 commandos as you wish and you can both control them and give them orders. i love this game!

I will give a bit of background, i recently installed a faction commander mod for stalker clear sky where you can hire you own squad of stalkers, equip them with any gear you liked and give them basic movement orders, all within the zone.
It was that which got me yearning for pretty much more of the same but with a much better command system and execution.
And clear sky is buggy enough without mods, now my quicksave crashes after a minute of play and i cba to relaod an earlier save.

Sounds a bit like Fallout: Tactics.

Free roaming: Check.

Squad based: Check.

RPG aspects: Check.

Outfitting your men: Check.

Ambushes: Check.

Not sure if what you're asking for exists outside of fantasy. Squads are in plenty of games that people have mentioned, rpg elements with squads are in a few games, but rpg elements with squads while playing in a sandbox world? Sounds like a new genre, hop to it. :p

I can't think of anything that fits exactly with your demands but I'm imagining something in between Dawn of War 2 and Valkyria Chronicles: both are worth the purchase.
