Quick opinion on something, I've got a story here and I'm thinking about naming the protagonist Hero (because I'm using Greek names), as a cute joke but also as a way to kind of explore the whole hero myth and the whole concept (especially applying to Greek Mythology)I'm also going to name the old mentor figure Mentor(another Greek name). So, too gimmicky? too kistchy?

You wouldn't be making anything new, really. There was Hiro (pronounced "hero") from Heroes who dreamt to be a hero. I don't think yours would be more obnoxious than that. As long as you don't make the story too serious.

Heh, Greek mythology. You know it's good because everyone dies.

It's quite blatant symbolism, and having it as the main protagonists name means it will have quite a prominent effect on the rest of the writing, but Shakespeare did exactly the same thing in Much Ado About Nothing [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Much_Ado_About_Nothing] and if it is supposed to be a rather light-hearted deconstruction of Greek mythology then the obvious nature of it could work to your advantage, if not you could try a variation of the name, "Herocles" or something.

Choose another language, as Greek is done to death (Says the guy that uses almost exclusively Greek names. Fuck.).

I dunno, seems kind of contrived.

Like you're saying 'Hey guys, looks what I did, clever huh?'
This.

If you are using greek inspiration at least come up with something related in terms of roots and stuff.

One typical name I use for characters is "Solirian" obviously having to do with the sun (sol) and king (rian), so it still has a hint of greek but could pass off as being its own thing.

Eh, I'm pretty sure this sort of thing has been done before.
It'd be better to make a villain named Hero and take a look at destiny and free will. Then again I lean more towards that sort of theme.

why dont you name the villian hero?

you could riff on this for ages.
And name the hero something evil sounding? Lord Bloodthrone or Hitler Hitler-Hitler or something. That could be great. Especially if the villain ends up saving the world by accident, while the hero unwittingly threatens it.
