So as far as the evidence gathered of the time of this post, a wellness check was called on a man ( Ronald Troyke) because his brother thought he was going to do something crazy. There is video evidence of Troyke walking after a police officer who it seems like he shot. The officer, Gordon Beesley, died from his injuries.

When Troyke shot, Beesley, he went back to his truck to change his firearm to an AR-15. A Good Samaritan named John Hurley saw this, drew his handgun and shot Troyke to prevent any further loss of life.

Hurley proceeded to pick up the AR-15 at the wrong time. An officer came on the scene, saw Hurley holding the AR-15 and promptly shot him dead.

No one is talking about this. This is why I fear the cops. Because they basically excused the officer who killed the Hero that prevented further loss of life. And instead of holding the officer to any measure that you and I would be held to, they said the tragedy that took Hurley's life lies squarely on Troyke.

I don't want to whitewash things. This was a dangerous situation for police officers. A man with possibly some degree of delusion actively hunted them down. That's frightening stuff. Bar none. And I wish that on no one. But that doesn't excuse all actions after that.

I'm not surprised I'm not hearing that much about this. There's not a winning side for anyone. "Back the Blue No Matter What" loses its luster when the other cause "A Good Guy with a Gun can stop an active shooting" runs up against this.

I mean, here it is. It actually, truly happened. A man stepped up when he could have ran away, and prevented other cops from being killed. This whole thing is a travesty from beginning to end.

It's a bit bad to say since it (almost) worked out here, but "he stepped up when he could have run away" is him making a mistake as a gun owner. Even if legally you don't have to retreat, you absolutely should retreat from any dangerous situation you are able to and your gun should be your absolutely last resort and used purely for self defense. He shouldn't have tried to kill the gunman. Especially if it was a crowded area. He could have missed, the bullet could have overpenetrated, he could have been criminally liable even if morally he was correct. And of course, he could be mistaken for a belligerent gunman by an approaching police officer, which is exactly what happened.

Basically he lucked out it worked as well as it did up until he was shot.

The people who chant "the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun" seem to believe that the "good guy" magically gains a white cowboy hat so that Johnny Law can instantly tell they're a "good guy".

What happened here is the simple fact that reality ensued, and police arriving on the scene saw "man with gun" and had no way to tell at a glance that the man they saw with a gun wasn't the crazed gunman trying to murder cops. And this is only going to get worse as the police feel more targeted while gun fetishists try to play our their Wild West fantasies. (No insult to John Hurley here, as it seems he just tried to stop a bad situation and paid the ultimate price for it.)

Yeah I read about this a day or so ago and had the same kinda responses. Just like when that other guy managed to hold a criminal at gunpoint at a bar till the police showed up and shot the "good guy with a gun" it's only more inarguably clear as day there was never such a thing as a "good guy with a gun" in the context of complex and human reality and the NRA have always been full-of-shit corporate grifters high on the blood of their own country's victims and paranoia. If the devil were real, they'd be a prime suspect, while the republican party would be their enablers.

That was always something I thought was weird about the "Good guy with a gun" argument. I suppose if he's there, defuses/eliminates the situation, and then the cops show up you're (probably) fine but if you jump in with your gun and cops are either already on scene or they're rolling up mid-gun fight, they're gonna see you with your gun and shoot you. Or what always happened in my stupidly overactive imagination is that the bad guy gets shot by a good guy but then another good guy shows up and shoots that good guy and then another good guy shows up and shoots that good guy and... šŸ˜…

It is very unfortunate as it does sound like he may have saved lives in doing this but it's ultimately a risk you take when you take up arms. This shit isn't the movies where John McClane can just get into a firefight and everyone realizes that he's clearly the good guy...
