Looking at DICE's (EA's swedish developer of Battlefield) Wikipedia , I think he's talking about Mirror's Edge, as it's the only new "innovative" game they have created recently. Failing to see the problem though, Mirror's edge was great, but so is Battlefield. I've been a fan of the series for years, including there Bad Company series. I can't wait for the third Battlefield to come out, it's been far to long since I played a real Battlefield game, 2142.
Yep, that's the one.
Don't get me wrong, I'm also a fan of the Battlefield franchise. I played Battlefield 2 extensively, Bad Company a little bit, and the trailers for Battlefield 3 look incredible. However, that doesn't mean I want a studio with as much talent as DICE doing nothing but putting out endless sequels to a franchise that is far from innovative, simply because they're a safe bet to make money.
I know Mirror's Edge was not a financial success, due to the enormous budget involved in creating a brand new engine for it. However, that engine is now finished and ready to be used again. Hell, the new Frostbite 2.0 engine they're using for BF3 would be fantastic for a Mirror's Edge sequel as well.
I'm not saying they should never make another Battlefield game; I'm saying that they have other franchises that require their attention. Mirror's Edge was one of the most groundbreaking and innovative games to come out in the last decade, as well as being incredibly fun and well-polished. It had flaws and things about it that people disliked, but isn't that always the case with a new engine?
When Assassin's Creed came out, another game that was a brand new IP on a brand new engine, it was a great game that was severely hampered by bugs and gameplay issues. Then, they made a sequel on the same engine, and...voila. An amazing game on the same amazing engine, but with everything we disliked about the first game fixed and reworked to be better than ever.
I see in Mirror's Edge what I saw in the first Assassin's Creed game; a fantastic and exciting new IP with enormous potential, but some hurdles that still need to be overcome. There's an enormous amount of potential in the franchise, and I see no reason a second Mirror's Edge couldn't be to the Mirror's Edge franchise what Assassin's Creed II was to the Assassin's Creed franchise. But this will never happen if EA doesn't let DICE put the development time and money required into the project...and when a new IP with amazing new ideas and huge potential falls by the wayside because the publisher doesn't want to take a risk...that's when the gaming industry has failed us, the consumers.
