Do you live in BC? Do you have friends that live in BC? Well today is voting day, and normally I'd be like "Voting... wooh?" but this time around I'm like "VOTING! WOOOOH!" because there is a delicious referendum on the ballot. This is a referendum that I have been campaigning for tirelessly (well, not quite, I'm thoroughly exhausted) because it represents real change. Oh the paper cuts I have suffered for your freedom! What the referendum is about is electoral reform. Getting rid of our completely bogus system (First-Past-The-Post) and adopting one designed for our province by voters to actually work for voters, BC-STV (Single Transferable Vote).
Oh, and in case you want to know how disproportionate BC elections are with our current system, take a gander at:
(The BC Liberals are our right wing, privatizing and globalizing the shit out of everything and leaving people in the dust. The name is for irony's sake I presume.)
Anyway, I guess most people reading this aren't British Columbian, so I'll give you something to talk about by telling you a little bit about the campaign. The No group consists of two dudes, and they've put all of their energy into television ads and full page newspaper ads, and have had most of the mainstream media on their side (CanWestGlobal and CTVglobemedia are both very right-wing). The Yes side consists of over 3000 volunteers who've been running around talking to people and giving out pamphlets, putting out TV and radio ads when they can afford to, but mostly just counting on word of mouth.
This is a battle between the corporate mainstream and grassroots movements.
So I say to you, outside observers, who do you think will win?
