Hi Sonic, it's been a long time...

Today I got my copy of Sonic Generations in the post. I spent several hours getting the shrink wrap off the case and I popped the disk into my PS3, and I sat down on my couch.

"Let's see how correct that Critical Miss comic was..."

See, I'm Erin in that comic. I was around 4 years old when I got my Sega Megadrive (screw you, it's the Megadrive), and Sonic was the first game I had for it.

Sonic was my first ever videogame adventure, and for that, I will always have Sega's back, no matter how drunk or violent they get at parties.

So when I started the game, and chubby little classic Sonic was standing at the beginning of the Green Hill Zone, a level I've completed countless times before, but with a coat of modern paint, I felt emotions that, for a long time, I thought not even nostalgia could muster in me.

And with a tear in my eye, and a smile on my face, I had that reunion. That reunion that I've waited several years for. Like seeing one of my best friends hit rock bottom, only for them to come back stronger than ever.

It's been a long time...

I still need to get this. Played it a bit and liked what I have seen so far.

I put it off for a while too, I saw it on sale and I thought, fuck it, for 20 quid I don't mind getting my heart broken again.

I'm glad I did.

I would have grabbed it during the Steam sale but I am adverse to playing Sonic games on the PC, even with joystick compatibility. Just doesn't seem like an authentic Sonic experience to me for some reason. Unless its Sonic CD I suppose.

The only thing I am disappointed in is the lack of a Sonic 3 stage. Give me Ice Cap Zone! :(

Yeah, I would have loved to see Hydrocity Zone or Angel Island Zone.

You see, I would say those as well (because I love them), but they kind of already covered those bases with Greenhill Zone and Chemical Plant Zone. Hyrdocity Zone and Flying Battery are two of my all time favorites.

Yeah, that would have been awesome.

Ah well, ce la vie.

I personally think Sonic made his comeback last year with Colours. But then, I also thought Heroes was great fun and people tend to over-exaggerate how crap recent Sonic games have been, so take that as you will. Anyways, it's good to have the little blue dude back. Hopefully, with all the positive reception and good will Sega have got from this, they'll stick with what works.
Exactly.

I didn't play Sonic Colours, but I hear that the characters didn't take themselves too seriously, which was a fatal error back when they went to 3D.

Hell, I'm loving that the classic Sonic doesn't say a word, his facial expressions are all that's needed.

They went for a more comedic take in Colours, and I really think it worked. Characters like Robotnik (that's his name dammit!) work much better when they're not trying to be uber-serious. He's too ridiculous a villain to ever pose a serious threat.

For me, what made the game great was that they made 3D Sonic work. It has it's 2D sections, which are great of course, but in Colours the 3D sections managed to hold up just as well in my opinion. That was the moment for me when I felt Sonic was really back.
Agreed, Sonic very much needs to be like Mario in that regard.

A slight plot to progress through, nothing too serious, and solid gameplay.

Tell that to Sonicteam in 2006 and they would have mauled you like a rabid raccoon. I completely agree though. I enjoyed the story of Sonic Adventure when I was 10, but in retrospect it was completely unnecessary. Unless you want to completely reinvent an old property you've really got to play to the franchise's strengths. I'm glad they are finally realizing everyone loved Sonic games because of the unique platforming experience it offers... going really really fast! :D

Let's wait and see how well Sonic 4: Part 2 fairs. It looks promising so far (more so than the first thankfully) and will be a good indicator that the series is back on track.

Worth getting?

If you have Generations then I would say no. I enjoyed it more than most, but the physics are all wrong. I am glad they are fixing it up in the next one.

Hit and miss honestly. It's good to see the old formula with the new spin on it, it plays great, and it feels a lot like Sonic Advance. My big issue is that it's just reproductions of the older games, 'Botnik fights are copy-pasted from the old games.

Also, isn't it spelled c'est la vie?
Only if you're French :D

We beat the French enough times to use their language any way we want :D
