What's your opinion on hipsters? Do you see them a lot? Do you have hipster friends? Or are you a hipster yourself? Well, you can't really say that because then you wouldn't be a hipster because you admitted to being a hipster.

Oh goody, I get to post this video again.

Not liking something, simply because it's popular, makes you a dickhead.

Spending more time trying to look like you don't care about your appearance than people who do care, also makes you a dickead.

Haven't you heard? Being a dickhead's cool.

Obviously, I'm only referring to the pretentious, condescending hipsters (to be fair, if you're neither of these things, then you're probably not a hipster).

but the irony would be so sweet.

I used to be a hipster, also I don't see any realy harm in them. I hate the pretentious ones but it's unfair to judge someone just by the clothes they wear or the people they hang out with. It's just their style, you wouldn't like someone judging you for liking video games after all.

Hipsters are trying to be hated by the world. That's their sense of purpose or rebellion or whatever. They're like passive trolls. Don't give them any attention, and the skinny jeans & obscure bands will disappear.

The only hipsters I've seen are on this website. I've never actually met one in real life... at least not a blindingly obvious one. I suppose they could've been closet hipsters.

Apparently there are loads at uni, but I've never been, so I have to take my friend's words for it.

What is with all the threads about hipsters lately? I mean, does anyone even know what a hipster is?

Really from the sheer number of threads about how much people hate them I would assume they are some kind of combination of foxnews-talking-head/hitler/stalin/dracula thing.

I agree. The only bad hipster is the "I'm smarter/cooler/more intellectual than you" type. The rest aren't really an issue.

A song recommended to me by a friend (a hipster).

This thread is now 500% more hipster.

I know I sure as hell don't. The best definition I've been able to gleam is that a hipster is anyone who dislikes something popular (logical reasons for such an opinion be damned), anyone who owns an apple product, or really any time you run across someone with an opinion or taste that differs from yours and you can't understand.

Of course then it could be those types of people who act superior because they're on some kind of "everyone's a sheep but me and my friends" kick. Though I usually just call those people douche bags followed by a swift kick to the testicles, or a kidney punch if it's a lady.

Someone told me Hipsters are into "retro" things.

Well I was brought up in the 80's and still love "most" (I say most because, as i've said before, I hated my mullet ... didn't at the time but looking back now I physically cringe) things from my childhood.

If thats hipster then thats me.

I'll be truthfully honest with you guys and gals though. I'm 31, I rarely step foot outside due to having a wife that works shitty hours as a nurse, a job of my own that takes up a lot of my time and 5 kids to raise (well 3 teenagers and 2 kids) so i'm pretty much out of the loop on most things....

So my honest part is .... I have absolutely no idea what the hell a hipster is.

The only time I hear these things is when I read these forums.

See there's your problem, you can't really definitively identify any one as a hipster, so much as pick out particular traits that might pertain to one's concieved perception of the hipster culture, as demonstrated below:

Hey! I like those things. :( See I don't consider myself a hipster and I don't really think I've met one of the uber pretentious, supercilious 'I liked it before it was mainstream ones.' I hate most contemporary pop music, not because it's mainstream but because I believe most of the music to be homogenous trash. I listen to all kinds of music of fluctuating genre and popularity and I loathe elitism; people shuold be allowed to indulge in their subjective tastes, without anyone acting like a **** about it. The difference I'm trying to get across is that hipsters like these things simply because they are obscure rather than for their actual merits and personal tastes. At any rate, I judge people on an individual basis and won't immediately jump to conclusions about someone's attitude merely based on their attire and media consumption.

I don't mind hipsters as long as they stay away from me. Luckily, I've enough half baked knowledge about philosophy to out-douche even the most condescending hipster.

See, ma, you were wrong when you said my hobby would amount to no good!

I like retro stuff, am in to weird fashions, listen to obscure music, hate on plenty of popular things, don't consider myself "mainstream", and have these awesome looking glasses but don't need glasses...

DEAR LORD WHAT HAVE I BECOME!!!?!!?!?!?1/

I think the best definition of a hipster is someone who dislikes mainstream/popular things specifically because they are popular and likes obscure things specifically because they are obscure. Blatant hypocrisy when it becomes apparent that they carefully match their tastes to the rest of the hipster subculture is optional but likely.
