If by chance Hitler was still alive, or if he just happened to come back from the dead. He calls a world wide press conference, admits to guilt, says he's deeply sorry, regrets all that he has done and is asking for forgiveness. He says he will do anything to redeem himself and asks for suggestions. You are in the front row of his press conference, and he points to you for the first suggestion. Do you tell him to kill himself, or do you think of something else?

Dunno really, him killing himself isn't exactly going to make up for it.

Great film.

What is it with these hypothetical scenarios lately? Hitler isn't alive, Nazi's are bad, forgiveness is available to all who deserve it. I guess my opinion is a sorry is better than nothing, but he wasn't sorry now, was he?

Personally, to absolve himself, I think he's need to work really fucking hard for all of the people discriminated against, all of the downtrodden people, for the rest of his life. I'd want him to give his life for what he did, but in a constructive way... killing him is a bit pointless (same as all capital punishment)

Wow, interesting post. If he was still alive, that would be a lot of time to try and realize your faults, and the incredible hatred towards him it would be interesting to wonder about if he would actually mean it or not. Maybe he would be morally crushed after such a long time (if we assume that he hasn't just popped out of the ground but living in hiding this whole time)

I couldn't say what I'd do because I don't really know right now. Even though he led all of these things, I suppose it is still true that mostly everyone else in Germany was following him, so did every last one of them that took part deserve to die?

OT: I guess I'd suggest exile. You know, just have him stay away from the rest of us.

"Don't be sorry, just don't do it again". Something a teacher of mine used to say. The situations may be a little different.

Life imprisonment. Stuck in a concrete cell with no window. No visitations. Food consists of bread and water shoved under the door. No chance for any type of early release.

That would do it for me.

A Hermit's Cave
Very difficult... very difficult...

If only this was the middle ages or before (but with modern attitudes towards him) I'd go with Alp Arslan after the Battle of Manzikert, having captured the Byzantine Emperor:

Alp Arslan: "What would you do if I were brought before you as a prisoner?"
Romanos: "Perhaps I'd kill you, or exhibit you in the streets of Constantinople."
Alp Arslan: "My punishment is far heavier. I forgive you, and set you free."

However, it isn't, so it isn't. I'd go with force him to apologise to the families of every person that WWII killed (on both sides), but I fear I'd be ridiculed for being an idealist idiot.

I'd kick my feet up, point at my shoes, look him in the eyes, and then I'd tell him:

"Go get your fucking shinebox."

There's nothing I could do to the man which would atone for anything, although I'm sure there are a few Jews in Israel willing to give it a shot.

I don't believe he deserves the chance to earn any forgiveness. I'd say that if he had done what he did, and he somehow realized how wrong it was, then he'd also realize that asking for forgiveness on his part is insulting and offensive. The most redeemable thing he could posibly do is rot in prison knowing full well that he doesn't deserve a shot at redemption, and accepting that.

From my perspective, (my personal) forgiveness isn't even close to an option. In fact I'd have to work real hard just to come to terms with the fact that he's being allowed some sort of existence (however impotent).

I'd be too busy trying to hear from the horses mouth whether or not it was true that he only had one nut to focus on forgiving. But otherwise, no. Probably not. I'm a doctor, not Gahndi, i only care when i'm professionally obligated to care.

If he didn't commit suicide, I doubt he'd have lived through a military trial. And if he came back to life from the dead, I can't tell him to kill himself since he's already dead. And, to be honest, I doubt he would ask for forgiveness.

But if we suppose he was truly sorry for what he did, was able to organize a conference, and he pointed to me because I'm a dashing young man in glasses working for a news medium of some kind as the one to give the first suggestion, I'd tell him to apologize for every man, woman, and child that was killed; a long list of names from every side of the war, living or related, will get a personal apology. His death would bring nothing, plus it would be sobering to know the millions of names that suffered because of him.
