Like many people I spent my well adjusted childhood hurling coins into arcade machines whilst simultaneously questioning the sexualities of any male smaller than me within the room, my own insecurities aside a personal favourite was always the latest in the seemingly endless House of the Dead series. A simple concept, there's a zombie, point and shoot the mothafucka, you'd think it would be simple anyway. HOTD:Overkill excited me, it gave me a reason to convince my mother she really did need to get a Wii and subsequently Wii Fit, we even went the extra mile and came away with the seemingly awesome 'Hand-Cannon' attachment for the wii controller.

Overkill isn't neccesarily a bad game, it's the Ronsil of the gaming world, it does what it says on the tin, there are many buildings, or houses, filled with dead people who now require re-killing in a particularly gruesome manner, or overkilling. If I fell upon this game in a crowded bowling alley after one bacardi breezer too many it would most likely entertain me no end until the inevitable ambulance ride home. But by the time I recover three days later and actually get a good look at the game it loses its shine.

The game is tedious, the story mode is too easy, and although the directors cut is good, by the time I reached it I was bored of the storyline and genuinely annoyed that I hadn't been eaten yet. The points system was great whilst playing with my happy chum, but when he toddled off home and I was left with the single player, I frankly didn't care how many points blowing that mutants head off got me, I just wanted it to look cool, which it didn't, every kill looks much the same as any other with mutant enemies falling into the category of tall skinny guy, short fat fella or nurse, or any of the above in a context dependent costume, ie clown or doctor. And every kill is either; you shoot them they fall down they don't get up, or you shoot their legs they go down, you go get another beer and come back in time to pop them off from a distance as they vainly crawl towards your delicious fleshy kneecaps.

And then there's the rail shooter gameplay, my thumbs thanked the heavens that they were freed from an analog stick for another day, but my eyes screamed in horror as the camera shots were likely imagined by the same group of idiotic students who shot The Blair Witch Project, when the camera finally decides to stay still for a few seconds its only so that you can see the pin sized butchers knife impale your puny head. Finally I would like to slate the weapons, it was nice to find an excellent array of weapons ranging from the downright puny pistol to the overly enthusiastic assault rifle, but these all pailed into nothingness as soon as I realised that by upgrading either the shotgun or automatic shotgun (if there's a difference I don't know what it is) to its maximum level I could wreak suitable mutant carnage whilst maintaining my frankly dull goregasm. Even the addition of the handcannon which finally gave my wii attachment a tiny thread of relevance to the game in the directors cut failed to pry my interest out of one hit shotgun kills.

HOTD: Overkill; its ok I guess.
