How can you die in a flashback?

he doesn't die if you play the game right. He dies if you screw up but thats not unlike in MGS3 when you kill snake/ocelot and it says time paradox. He doesn't die in the script, so it isn't cannon.
Obviously it creates a temporal rift which destroys the Universe and sets it on repeat, kind of like how a ruined tape will repeat the same three hundred frames over and over again until you succeed and place the timeline on the right path again.
As explained by the novel "Timescape";

This situation has always bugged me, too. At least Metal Gear's TIME PARADOX was an amusing nod at it. But the only other solutions I can think of are to not do playable flashbacks, or the very unsatisfying options of including super-competent AI buddies (oxymoron, I know) or being invincible.
