If there's one lesson you can take from RPS's Kickstarter Katchup every sunday, it's that the success of any project is both completely dependent on you and also totally out of your control.
The best thing you can do is show what you're working on(a youtube video or videos preferably, multiple screenshots otherwise), give a realistic timeline you intend to complete it, and make a preorder one of the lower tier rewards. Regular updates help a lot as well.
After that, it's entirely out of your hands. If it's a project people are interested in, it'll take off like Planetary Annihilation or Castle Story. If it's not, then it won't.
