I've wanted to lose weight for a while now, and I have tried nearly everything (except diet pills and starving, I have my standards). The weird thing is that quite a few people I know tend to stay thin despite regularly eating burger king and such. I know some of them do work out, but some (like my girlfriend) somehow can stay thin without working out and despite apparently eating a lot (hell, I'm in much worse shape than my girlfriend, yet I have an easier time walking, thank you Mini-Boot Camp). I gotta ask, when it comes to those people, what's their secret?

A high metabolism and a tight budget. Although I probably could stand to hit the gym a few times a week.

A fast Metabolism, it eventually slows down for everyone though... But it's not something you can change. Being slim doen't neccessarily mean fitness.

^^^ That and the fact that they probably skip some meals, as long as you get enough vitamins and minerals then you actually don't need the calories that three meals a day provide.

There's no such thing as a secret for weight-loss. Most people who can eat whatever they want and stay thin are active. Likely, it's not even formal exercise, it's just their normal activities.

I for one am a big fatty who is in the process of slimming down. Here is my "secret":

If you drink pop, stop it. Seriously...when I first started my work-outs, I hurt myself right away (bad luck at Ultimate Frisbee) but continued to not drink pop as part of my workout. I went from 240 pounds to 230 pounds on that alone in a few weeks.

Now I've healed up and have lost another ten pounds in two weeks by including exercise every day. Twenty minutes with my Kinect and UFC Trainer (you don't need this, all the exercises in the game are things you can do on your own). I like the game because it gives me structure and a goal. If you need something like this to help, it's well worth the price.

Just remember, you can exercise without having to do formal exercise. Find a friend and play tennis. Join a soccer league. Walk during your work break (my co-workers and I talk during this nice little walk around our building, it's business casual for us in Minnesota so no complaining that you can't do it)

My secret is the running I'm forced to do in football practice, Lifting lots and lots of weights (not just benching then calling it a day I do a lot of different workouts), and trying not to eat so many greasy foods or carbs. Low carb diets are impossible, they make up a large percentage of everything my mother and school expects me to eat. I tried it but It's just really really hard. I'm not skinny by any means but I'm happy being chubby tall and muscular. I hate my friends metabolisms though. A friend of mine eats only cheesy curly fries at lunch and she's one of the thinnest girls in school. Her insides are probably begging for a gentler diet and she will probably have to worry about high blood pressure and related conditions but for now she is thin.

Well some folks (like me) seem to have trouble putting on weight due to metabolism rates or whatever (I've had people claim there's no such thing as different metabolism rates but eeh...) I can eat Macdonalds for a week and not gain 2kg. In fact, I have.

Not sure about their secret.

But for you, I suggest finding out what you normally eat, count how much calories you take in, and find out how much you expend when going about your daily business.

Once you figure that you, either increase your physical activities until you start expending more calories than you take in, or change up your diet so you eat less calories than you expend.

People have differant metabolisms, meaning they process foods in differant ways.

Some advice from a guy who spent several years in the army? Exersize daily and eat a balanced diet. Start small and slow and build up. For example:

Week 1.
10 mins walk in the morning followed by 10 push-up and 10 situps.

Same in the afternoon/early evening.

Week 2. 20 mins walk (faster pace) 20 sit ups 20 pushups.

Week 3. 20 mins walk with gentle jogging added in. 30/30, push/sits.

Week 4. 15 mins walk 5mins of jogging added in. 40/40 push/sits.

Start on the basics and just add 10 to each week, if you feel you can do more then do so, but dont push yourself to far and allways get advice from a doctor if you are unsure.

Set yourself a goal of doing a 30 mins jog every morning with 50/50 push ups and situps, in say 6 months. And remember the more you do it the easier it gets.

I know the escapist thinks they're high and mighty, but suck it up. Read the sticky. Achieve greatness.
I see... You're saying metabolisms doesn't affect your weight? What? And you know... Generalizations are silly.

A combo of wicked fast metabolism, good exercise, and moderate eating. I may not exercise, nor care about how much I eat,but for some reason,I'm not a land whale. I attribute it to my metabolism. (Note,I'm not thin. However,I'm not overweight. I'm in limbo.)

As mentioned previously, though it can do with being stressed again, not everyone is the same.

The idea that there's some easy solution for everyone that "he did it, why can't you?", is only useful if you want to make overweight people feel guilty and ashamed for being overweight. If you really want to annoy people, though, you need a rich celeb wanker you hasn't quite realised that not everyone has a personal trainer they cna spend 4 hours a day with.

Additionally, being thing doesn't equate to being healthy. It's perfectly possible to be in good health despite having a few extra kilos...on the other hand, apparently many doctors have a tendency to blame nay health concerns larger people have on their weight, which has obvious consequences.

They do... but not at the level that people say they do. Im sorry I jumped at you. Ex-fatty here, when people say that it reminds me of all the bullshit excuses my family told me when I was fat to keep me fat and happy.

Also, you can speed up your metabolism. Slow metabolisms equate to lower caloric need/intake, not high fat retention. In theory, you could eat 1.5k calories of butter, vodka, and water; and lose weight. You'd probably develop a whole host of problems a month in from vitamin deficiencies and the such, but technically it should be possible.
Correcto! And to add onto this, remember kids: its easy to lose weight in a diet at first but gets more difficult as time goes on!
