Hey so every since iv been at college I have been unable to game since its been nearly impossible to mix in social, study, sleep, and fraternity pledging activities. I didnt even bring my gaming rig out here to force myself not to get distracted but I could not help it when I got an email saying i finally got invited to beta test SW:TOR. now I am so behind gaming news I have no idea if the game is now in open beta or still closed, but I was unable to test it with my macbook pro.

Now this sucks because I have been waiting for that damn game for years and my first chance to actually try it out was a complete fail :( I was wondering how people were enjoying (or not) the beta so far and could fill me in on the plus and negative sides of the game. I feel like it is destiny that i play this game however since it does come out on my birthday...

thanks in advance!

Not to sound like a jerk, but if you're not using that invite, can i haz plz :D.

But from a friend of mine in the beta says it is a lot of fun. He's been playing around with some of the classes, and likes the imperial agent the most.

He also says there are A LOT of choices (and a lot of funny options to).

One of my friends got me all psyched for it. I ended up singing up for the beta last weekend, so I have no idea if I'll actually get to play the beta.

I've never been a big MMO person, but hearing my friend talk about it is convincing me to give it a try. I'll probably be a Sith Inquisitor with the Assassin specialization.

I'll just have to not buy any of the other awesome games coming out this year so I can afford to play it. Except Zelda, that's on preorder already.

Just to let you know, if you have been in the beta, like I have, you agree to say only two things:

1. A beta exists.
2. You have participated in it.

But screw that, here's my opinion anyway:

For the first ten levels the gameplay is the same hotkey based game we've been playing since Everquest, it feels a little like playing KOTOR proper actually though. Where it differs from WoW (lets be honest, that's what everyone will compare it to) is the voice acting and interactive conversations make you care about those 10 bear asses they send you to collect. The companions I got were solid, and the classes I played to around level 10 (Agent, Jedi Knight and Trooper) were classes I picked because I thought there was 0% chance I'd ever play them on release, but all of them managed to draw me in to their stories and I was very sad when I remembered I wouldn't get to keep playing these characters for real, and had to say goodbye.

I'm not sure how long I'll stick around for the MMO part of the game after I've finished off my characters story, but I know I'll really enjoy it til' its finished.

I really really wish it wasn't an MMO. I like a lot things about it, but the fact that it's an MMO really cuts down the accessibility for me.

Not to be negative but I really don't. I would absolutely love another KotOR but that's probably not going to happen. I can't help but wonder how Warcraft fans feel...not fans of WoW but fans of Warcraft who desperately want a new Warcraft instead of more WoW expansions.

I would be perfectly content with a third Battlefront but I don't see that one coming either.

Agreed. Wholeheartedly. I would like another KotOR and another Battlefront, but those aren't forthcoming (Bioware even had the balls to call the Old Republic KotOR 3-12 or something) but I hate MMOs, can't play this anyway, don't have the money to support that habit and would be quite content if it were just buried in a whole somewhere and forgotten so I never have to hear of it again.

The idea of making decent game series into MMOs just annoys me. Sure they will get more appeal but they should at least continue the normal games instead of substituting them for expansions.

I've been burnt out on MMO's for awhile now so I really don't have much interest. It apparently takes place hundreds of years after the original Kotor games anyway so I don't really have any story motivation to play either, Star Wars being another thing I've burnt out on. I really don't care about the setting anymore, Jedi, Lightsabers, force powers, all that kung-fu shit they've been throwing in ever since Episode 1, it's just ruined my interest in the franchise.

Doesn't mean there still can't be good games or story told in that setting, but for me they do so in spite of the setting not because of it leaving me without any real motivation to even try the game aside from cynical curiosity.

I'm starting to think that TOR will end up being classed as something other than a 'traditional' MMORPG. At the moment, with things like companion stories (and npc love interests?!) it comes across more like a typical Bioware RPG that just happens to have a multiplayer element. I don't know if that's a good thing or not.

On the one hand it has the potential to draw in a new audience - but how long can it hold them when they have to pay a subscription month after month? On the other hand I simply don't see it appealing to the dedicated MMO crowd. Not long term.

And speaking of long term I still think that the update schedule will be an absolute nightmare unless they start cutting corners on the fully voiced/cutscene'd/unique stories side of things.

I'd rather have KotOR 3 than WoW in the Star Wars universe. Don't get me wrong, it looks decent and I hope it does well, but it just seems so...generic.

People can't really talk about it given they have to sign an NDA.

Anyone interested in it should join our Escapist user group though: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/Star-Wars-The-Old-Republic-SW-TOR

I'm very much looking forward to it; they're fixing the thing that stops me getting into MMOs in the first place. Also, I like teh Star Warz.

So, either I pay monthly for Star Wars Wow clone....
or I pay once for the completely new Original Awesome MMO Guild Wars 2.
After having played both at Eurogamer, my interest for Swotor has sunken to: none.

I'm very excited for it. I plan on healing with a Jedi Consular, and possibly a Smuggler as well.

The trailers are eye candy but the gameplay itself is just point and click to attack which put me off from wanting to play it (well that and being a subscription but we will see how long that will last).
