not to insult people on this site specifically, though I have read that we do often overestimate ourselfs.....and intelligence is a VERY hard thing to measure eather way

I mean some people might be usless acedemically...but VERY good with peope ect ect

I reckon it's easier for those of us at school, because we can compare ourselves to other people much more easily. I always score the highest in the class at maths tests, and I'm in the intelligent group, so I'm confident in saying that I'm pretty smart.

Having average intelligence is knowing that games are NOT responsible for violent crimes.

I know that's not exact, but at least this way those people claiming it to be can be seen as DUMB.

I was going to try and explain my stance on the matter.
Something about how intelligence goes deeper than any test results can show.
And I was going to also point out the irony in the OPs horrible grammar.

But I couldn't string the words together I wanted, failing at the very thing I was trying to explain.

So I wrote this instead...

It's simple statistics. We're on the Internet here and as these statistics show we're really a very amazing bunch:

Your typical internet user alone has an IQ of 147 and a 9-inch penis. Now imagine that on a distinguished site like the Escapist we're likely riding the upper slopes of all these curves.

Since I've been out of education, I've found the people with above average intelligence can do at least one of to things. They can explain a complicated theory in such a way most people without the same prior education can understand it and/or they can use what they already know to solve a perplexing problem.

I can do one of these, I tend to be able to make people understand chemistry and physics and whatnot, but I'm not so good with the application of what I know, well not qickly anyway.

I read posts on the internet. It's a good ego boost really. I also listen to talks people have on the bus or in the metro, very similar to average internet discussion in so many ways.

If my straight As in high school and first two semesters of college doesn't boost my confidence, I don't know what will.

...
then I took Art as major and realized that it wasn't such a clever decision...

Depends on what one's definition of 'intelligence':

1) Ability and capacity to assimilate knowledge
2) Ability and capability to analyse knowledge
3) Ability and predilection to apply knowledge
4) For dickheads - level of sophistry

Was going to write a post at a time
When my opinions and views were in order and fine
But the hour was late and my room was a state
And I realized that post I would never create

So this is the a post that I wrote instead
It's a post about intelligence, to post in a thread
By intelligence I don't mean test scores and IQs
By intelligence I mean common sense and wise views

The same way I know I'm above average height, above average weight, and I earn way above the average for people who live on this planet. Pick a criterion, measure yourself, measure everyone else, compare statistics.

Then ask yourself whether that makes you more worthy as a human being. Whether some number, some stat makes us different. Whether dividing ourselves into two camps, those above an imaginary line, and those below - whether that's useful, or valid, or relevant. Regardless of what you think, to do so is human nature.

Human nature is to want to win, and to want to team up with winners, and to be recognised for our worth. I have no problem with people declaring above average anything. They are just being human - and that's the same as me.

If people don't win on a certain criterion (let's say, 'an IQ test'), they usually pick a different one where they do (exam results, sports results, salary, number of friends) - and identify themselves with that camp by exactly the same mechanism - state you belong to your chosen tribe, casually denegrate, even if just to ourselves, people who do not.

I think it's that smug feeling of superiority when you feel you do that much better than most you compare to in whatever tasks there are. Or when people say it enough. Or in my case, when enough people'd said "Stop being so bloody smart! It's creepy!". Maybe it is that you have innate talents and can work things out faster than others under the same conditions.

Although if you actually are smart, and high IQ doesn't automatically make you smart, just... Capable, then you don't rub it in people's faces. There can be a world of difference in everyday life between smart and high IQ.

Ah well, whatever makes you think you're better than everyone else.

I could try and explain how I know, but most of you won't understand because you only have average inteligence...

There's no harm in trying.

On-topic: I'm not sure. I think it must be because they can quickly get a lucid understanding of things.

You don't. A stupid person is usually too stupid to know they're stupid, or at least won't admit it to themselves.

Though, average intelligence these days isn't exactly a high bar to reach.

If someone tells you their of above average intelligence, you can usually assume that they arn't.
