There are all kinds of RTS games out there that range from being VERY complicated to very simple

I do like simple ones beacuse of the just pick up and play but also the complicated ones seem to become really cool when you master it, but is it really worth it?

Anyways what are your guys favorite type of RTS and or how simple or complicated do your like your RTS

I like them complicated, yet balanced. I see Starcraft as the best RTS in history, right alongside Age of Empires 1, 2, and Age of Mythology.

Adversely, C&C is garbage and Halo Wars is the biggest shit stain I've ever seen to brush the RTS genre.

Epic and messy. Cracked says it best with their Ultimate War Sim

It depends. On large scale it's better to retain simplicity (so you can manage it all in realtime). Good example: World In Conflict.

There's also a second possibility for large-scale games - automatition. Good example: Supreme Commander.

On the other hand,Dawn Of War 2 and some other games are paving the way for real-time tactics, and i won't object to these either. I would like to see an RTT game where each player commands maybe 10 guys (a squad),or a handful (3-5) of armoured vehicles,or wing of 4 helicopters, and 12v12 matches are routine.

I prefer my RTS to be pretty simple, especially when it comes to resources which is why I like Company of Heroes so much as the fighting is pretty much always concentrated around the resource points.

Complex and detailed games are more suited to turn based games in my opinion so you can take your time with it.

I like control-point resource-systems, such as Z, Dawn of War 1, Battle for Middle-Eart 1, Supreme Commander and, to an extent, Battle for Middle-Earth 2 (it's more about the amount of terrain in general than specific points).

As for the armies, well, it definitely needs a scissors-stone-paper-like concept, otherwise it's too simple for my taste. But I think pretty much all RTS these days have that.

Personally, I prefer large-scale battles over mini-ones. Many RTS (especially Blizzard-made ones) are more about tactics and micro than strategy and macro. I barely noticed this until I played Supreme Commander which was... epic.

Have you ever seen a pro tournament match on Starcraft? The contestants get steamrolled if they're not strong in every category.

I'm subscribed to two Starcraft Tournament channels (English and Korean); if you want to see some examples, just PM me or I can post them here for the thread.

I watched a lot of VODs myself. They are fun and can be quite epic, yeah, but they can't compare in scale, no way.

I just watched a few Supreme Commander videos on youtube. Epic, yes. Incomparable in scale, yes.

But to my eyes, it looks like nothing more than a glorified Risk, and I think it'd get boring fairly quickly. Though, it's probably just me. My judgment is a bit skewed at the moment due to personal issues...

Can't blame you, it is blander in graphics/style than Starcraft or Warcraft 3 (which look much more organic). But I guess it's partially because of its heritage (inoffical Total Annihilation sequel, if you ever played that?) as well as its scale. My computer already chugged hard as hell, trying to keep it running steady, it would've been a slide-show if it was any more detailed than it is.

Anyway, it is quite different in feeling because of the larger distance from your units. You don't care as much about individual tanks or whatever, what's important is keeping the economy running and dozens of factories producing. Throwing waves of units against each other, what becomes important are certain special abilities such as carrier-units, nukes or radar-jamming for sneak attacks while the main battle rages on almost automatically.

But, of course, that's where personal taste comes in again.

I like a lot of RTSs as long as they're not TOO simple like halo wars. (probly goin' git flamed fer that.) a nice simple one (not too simple) is AoE2, AoE1 kinda sucked and AoE3 kinda blows but AoE2 does not utilize it's lungs in either manner. 1 word. Dune. okokok more than one word Dune is pretty old and kept it simple nicely, (again not too simple) and was pretty fun. Oh yes and I almost forgot, (not) my Favorite RTS; Starcraft and it's expansion, Brood War, (a sorta' complex game). Starcraft 2
does seem like it SHOULD be pretty good, (although it may turn out to be another AoE3.
*Exhales through pursed lips*) but I'm pretty annoyed, (for lack of swear-word allowance) at that freakin' LAN thing.
