I usually go for a stealthy sniper type character if possible, and i would usually put a few points into one handed melee weapons for and up close attack.( bare in mind i have Fallout 3/ New Vegas in mind as i write this) So what do you normally choose?

I know this is a really random aside, does anyone still listen to the streets? I like them but as far as I'm aware I'm the only one who knows who they are anymore within my social group.

In RPGs, the vast majority of the time, I make female characters.

Sneaky, mage or a sneak/mage hybrid.

Also, I'll spend like an hour on character creation, painstakingly sculpting a character is part of why I love RPGs :D

I model them as closely to me as possible. I'll also make choices based on how I'd behave in real life.

Usually I'll be a Stealth Character, but I kind of like the Assassin feel, so I'll also put points into blade or an equivalent.

Love me some Are-Pea-Geeze.

Varies greatly from RPG to RPG. But if we're talking video games only:

Balanced, but aggressive. I like having high attack and speed, both at range and close-up. In Fallout New Vegas, my character is a very good intermediate range and melee shock trooper, with decent precision weapons - including a fully modded laser rifle - and That Gun loaded with armour-piercing bullets, as well as a katana. Most of my characters tend to have a high intimidate factor - don't get in my way.

I actually only just bought his CDs for the first time about a year ago, although I've been aware of him for ages. I think he's pretty good, but from what I've heard, his new stuff is a step down. It would surprise me if your friends had completely forgotten him though (assuming they knew who he was once) because he's distinctive and talented.

OT: If given the fighter/mage/rogue choice, I go mage, unless elder scrolls, where I go sneaky. If speech or science/technology stuff is a choice, then I go that way. My characters are all named after random figures out of European legend/mythology. I go back and forth between male and female, but I like all my characters to look distinctive, whether by giving them a permanent quizzical expression or by looking like that guy from the Goonies.

In videogame (action-)RPGs, I like to play ranged. In Dungeon Siege 2, that means having a party full of rangers/blood assassins, in Fallout 3 it means being a master with small guns and energy, in System Shock 2 it means conventional weapons (assault rifle), in Hellgate London it means a hunter etc.. Frankly, I've noticed that in many games, melee isn't balanced too well. As a ranged character focusing on massive damage, I tend to be capable of killing enemies I really shouldn't be able to yet through good positioning, hit and run etc.. That's not something a tank is particularly good at.

Choices-wise, I usually play "lawful" to "chaotic good". Even in games where you play an "evil guy" like Overlord, I play a good guy. It's odd, but I both dislike playing evil and rarely ever like the benefits (they tend to be more short-term in videogames, while good behaviour tends to net better long-term results). So it's a mixture of dislike of the evil options and simple pragmatism.

I usually make them a silly representation of me. Silly in the sense that there's no way I'll may them look completely like me, so pale skin, thin figure, and long dark ginger hair is good enough.

On a story based RPG I really couldn't tell you what kind of playstyle I have, but in MMOs I go for DPS.

I usually play a RPG the first time as "myself", which means the choices I make are what I would make in that situation. Gender, Race, Class is never important and it different depending what I feel like at the time.

Then the next time I play through the game again I'll role play a little and play a character that isn't like me, that might do different things. Skyrim is a great game for playing different roles. Fallout 3 and Dragon Age also.

Sometimes when I have a hard time deciding what to play as in an RPG, since I am the kind of person that has a hard time making there mind up, I go to Random.org or whip out the old dice and randomize a character.

This isn't available in all RPG's, but I love making a scientist character! I tend to make them quick and stealthy, with one or two basic weapon skills (not maxed, but proficient), and then heavily specialize them in some field. This depends on the game, so it can range from computers or electronics to alchemy. I find that whatever "sciency" roll the game decides to include usually allows for some interesting opportunities to use the environment to your benefit.

Plus, if I take a "villain" route, there's nothing cooler than a mad scientist.

I hear that. I get really obsessive with my created characters too, if I'm playing and I see that they didn't turn out quite as I would've liked them to, I restart and try again.

When it comes to the specifics of my character, like class and gender. It depends on the game itself, I'll usually pick whatever I think would be a good fit for that world.

I'm invariably an offensive female mage, where possible I wear full armour as well for better defence, except when helmets hide hair. I like to refer to this type as a 'battle mage', I never use manual buffs and I usually choose fire or ice type magic.

Really depends on the game. In a game like Skyrim I go Archer/Stealth most of the time. I usually expand on that later in the game with a longsword and heavy armor. But in Demon's Souls I ended up as a spellsword in light armor. Male or female doesn't usually interest me much, unless there's some fine 3rd person arse to be found.

Female Thief/Assassin/Rogue-types, for the most part.

Stealth is my favored playstyle.

Depends. I have a preference for balanced non-magic based warriors. This mean skills are put into both ranged and melee combat. I prefer agility over resilience, but if I have to compromise I will use stealth tactics too.

Sometimes I also like to create a hybrid class, if a game allows it... usually an offensive warrior with with warding/defensive spells or, if I feel like switching up that formula a defensive warrior with offensive spells.

I usually make characters who specialize in killing shit and doing it fast. Doesn't matter how they do it, as long as it gets done. I tend to favor mages and assassins, though nothing can beat a good warrior.

I'm particularly stupid when it comes to making RPG characters. I always choose a quick rogue/thief style character just because I like the idea, but I play RPGs as if I'm a warrior/tank just jumping right into the fray and button bashing until stuff dies (often myself). I HATE using stealth and avoid it at every possible opportunity (playing Assassin's Creed makes me want to gnaw my own arm off in frustration and annoyance). However many times I start a game thinking 'right, this time I'll actually be a warrior/mercenary' though, when it comes to the crunch I just can't do it. The call of the rogue is too strong: the mystery, the inevitably angst-ridden backstory. And they're usually prettier...

And yes, I do hate myself for that last sentence.

Mage, if possible throw in a shortsword. I prefer to have lots of options and debilitating effects on my enemies - I had a bit in every tree in my DA:O mage, and I like my Shepard on the Sentinel side. Also, probably pale with lots of dark hair, for some reason. I just like that. Oooh, and I love vampire-effect abilities. Nothing like stealing from my enemies and using it against them!

I make characters that are vastly underpowered, but look damn cool.

In neverwinter nights 1, I made a staff wielding monk. And an Illusionist mage, even though half of the enemies there is immune to mind magic :D

In diablo 2, I made polearm barb, because he looks badass with that giant weapon

In Oblivion, I went with a no armor, illusion based swordsman, that was funny and challenging to play :)

In Fallout (1&2) I always go for jinxed, very lucky unarmed guy....

So on and so forth....

It doesn't matter if you go down... as long as you go down with style :D

I usually go for the silent gruff tank. Cares deeply for the few he calls friend and will protect them with his life. Doesn't speak much but when he does it's important.

Otherwise I go for a young, mentally unstable mage that has infinite power but doesn't know how to use it or just uses it for ridiculous things. A fourth-wall breaking type that is immortal, and constantly dying.
