So like how the title suggests... how exactly did this game affect society? Maybe some of us haven't heard of this but, I once saw an article on yahoo news about a couple getting married because of halo, their wedding was halo themed too... And remember when halo 3 came out? not too many people went to the cinemas did they? And now look at its effects on the youth. halo is not bad, the point of this post is to find out people's opinions on this controversial, epic, great, awesome, possibly overrated, and popular game.

note: how is this bad?

I think Halo helped bring the gaming industry to the mainstream and especially Halo 3 helped the game industry thrive/ By mass hype and media surrounding it, big investors realise how much effect gaming has on the youth and therefore starting investing in games and now it's really helping gaming thive. Halo alone did not accomplish this I admit but it certainly helped.
Also it helped bring millions of people together to have fun killing each other mercilessly. In my own life Halo was the thing that introduced me to the gamer lifestyle which in turn helped me meet my friends and eventually the girl of my dreams. So I guess what I'm saying is Halo will always have a spiritual connection to me.

Actually come to think about it Halo has greatly effected our society because the franchise isn't even TEN years old yet, and the main trilogy ENDED but we are still talking about it. Much to anger of Max.

*WINCE* Another Halo thread.... everyone hide before Max hears.

Hmmm... Halo certainly is Microsoft's little milestone...
I admittedly got a lot of enjoyment out of playing co-operative with my friends over the years... although that's as far as it went (never having owned an Xbox).
Its fun... but i don't think i could ever get into it seriously...

The first game did a lot for console gaming, especially FPSs. It made gaming much more accessible to the masses (whether or not this was a good thing is up to you). Similarly, the series also did a lot for multiplayer gaming (Xbox Live douchbags notwithstanding). So yeah, it was an important game. Maybe not the most important game, and certainly not the holy grail of gaming, but neither was it the cesspit of the modern gaming industry.

[theescapistforums]Hurrr, i'm a mouthbeathing gamesnob about to ***** and moan about how Halo is popular and sucks.[/theescapistforums]

In all honesty apart from competing for the title of largest entertainment launch, Halo 3's impact on society has been quite small. Halo has yet to transcend genres the way a really good movie or song can, and for now remains steadfastly within the realms of gamer chic. True, games like Halo have helped broaden the population of gamers in general, I'd say there's a few million people who are gamers today because certain games are so accessible - in the late 90's there really was an elitist culture where everything had been done and if you didn't know everything already then you could just get the hell out.
I won't give all the credit to Halo though, let's say the PS2 and Xbox brought gaming into the mainstream.

Though thanks to Halo, I can wear this shirt in public and strike up a conversation about video games in the span of a 13-floor elevator ride.

These are all lies. I don't see how Halo could in any way "affect society". Just my opinion.

I thought they already had one of these threads...or a million.
Halo affected today's society? Maybe it affected the people who played it. And that goes as far as liking the game. If I would ask a few hundred people in my city if Halo affected them, they would ask: "What's Halo?". Only people who should care about it are the people who played or manufactured it.

Halo defined the games of our generation, and is a landmark in gaming. And the people who hate it are also the most infamous trolls ever. Plus it has a really obnoxious online community, then again so does COD5 + COD4.

halo is probably the main reason why i wont even bother buying a 360. i think Halo would never have been thought of without Games Workshop, who invented the "Armored Space Marine".

This is the third time I've been called a Halo fanboy and now it's really pissing me off. Sure I'll probably buy every Halo game and book that will ever come out but since Gears 2 came out i have never had the same amout of interest for Halo 3.

I think there should be a word for people like you, people who call anybody giving Halo praise a fanboy. Stupid should do for now.
