How long can current gen last people?

The seventh generation of consoles had an unusually long life span. Not only did the PS3 and Xbox 360 last 7-8 years without a successor, but these consoles continued to receive many AAA and indie games well into the current generation, until 2016 when nearly everybody fully transitioned to the new consoles. Eighth generation is already 5 years old at this point, and with next gen looking to arrive within the next 3-4 years, will the PS4/XB1/Switch gen last even longer than seventh gen? And how long can current consoles last developers and consumers?

Game graphics can always get better, and this gen has given us some pretty impressive visuals. But I think we're reaching a point where graphics are taking longer to age poorly. There comes a point where graphical leaps are going to become increasingly less noticeable, and the rising development costs of AAA games will limit what developers can feasibly produce for a commercial product.

In past generations, developers and publishers were rather quick to adopt next gen consoles, swiftly leaving old ones behind in favor of 16 bit, 3D, and 128-bit systems. But starting with the PS3 and 360 gen, we've started seeing a big shift. HD development caused a huge whiplash to game developers, and a lot of smaller teams were fine with making games on low powered SD hardware such as the PS2, Wii, and Handhelds like the DS and PSP. To a lot of smaller teams, those consoles were good enough for what they wanted to make. But times have changed, engines like Unreal Engine 4 and Unity have helped simplify the process, and allowed small teams to create high quality visuals for less money and resources.

That brings us to today. The current gen consoles, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch are all running off-the-shelf PC based (tablet based in the Switch's case) hardware that is 3-5 years old, easy to program for, and supports highly popular and very scale-able engines like Unity and Unreal Engine 4, allowing for easy porting between all platforms. I'd say currently, 8th gen is the easiest consoles have been to develop for in a long time. But what about the future? While the AAA establishment will continue to chase the quest for realistic characters, and seemingly endless and complex open-worlds, the indie guys, and smaller mid-range developers might be fine with supporting current gen consoles for quite a long time. Many consumers are becoming less swayed by high terraflop counts and super detailed textures, as evidenced by the modest sales of PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. A lot of people just want something that plays good looking games and lots of them. And in that sense, current gen may co-exist with next gen for a lot longer than some people think. AAA guys will fully transition quicker, but I can see the PS4, Xbox One, and the Switch continuing to get plenty of indie, and mid-tier games for at least another 5-6 years. These games really don't need next gen specs, and for indies, even potato PCs can be more than enough to create what they want to make.

The console market is beginning to look more and more like the Telvision market. You have all sorts of 4k TVs come out every year, and while they have their market, most people are for now, fine with their 1080p screens, and will be for quite a while. Bottom line is that I believe current generation is going last many developers for a long time, even longer than last generation.

Well, current consoles are running on off-the-shelf PC components, like you said, and off-the-shelf PC components haven't made any huge breakthroughs in the last 3-4 years either, at least in terms of power.

And certainly not in cost. Hell, graphics cards basically don't depreciate anymore.

Consoles have been transitioning to multimedia devices for a decade and a half, at least. They're little better than closed ecosystem, brand name PCs now with shitty UI, except for the Switch. The trend will continue until we quit calling them gaming boxes. Microsoft will probably sell out to Amazon or Google for the Xbox and they'll integrate it into their Internet of Things paradigm, and that will truly be the end of consoles.

It doesn't really matter how long this gen goes for. It's among the last. Devices are moving beyond graphical parity as a benchmark for development eras, as it has slowed down and stylism has bloomed. New technology paradigms have arisen.

Stop worrying and love the PC.

I'm start to suspect that, maybe, 2020 is when we'll a proper PS5/Xbox4...with Nintendo doing who knows what at this point.

I'd also suspect that after the next gen is released we won't see another generation for a LONG time, like a decade or more, but rather one or more PS4 Pro type examples.

Then again...you never know what technological breakthrough might happen...

I don't know, I kinda sick of the whole "console generation" thing. Having to buy a new system every few years is really fucking irritating.

Didn't Microsoft hint at E3 that the next Xbox is coming out in 2020? I hope they release a more powerful console at launch alongside the normal console instead of 4 years into the console generation, I don't feel like having to buy new consoles every 4 years.

Which is exactly why most devs will be supporting current gen systems for quite a while longer, even after next gen arrives. Next gen AAA games will be fully next gen within 3 years or so, but many indie and AA developers will likely continue to release PS4, Xbox One and even Switch versions of games for at least another 5 years, and it especially helps that current gen consoles are so easy to program for, meaning the can last developers longer than even last generation.

It could last forever if you lot weren't so easy to convince that we 'need another one.'

well seeing as the Switch only came out last year and considering that it's been a huge success, i'm expecting it to be around for at least another 4 or 5 years.

Xbone and PS4 probably only have a year or 2 left in em before they announce the next ones and join the Switch in Gen 9

Haven't they already released new hardware platforms, in the form of XBox One S/X and PS4 Pro or whatever? The whole advantage of consoles being affordable, not needing updating, not needing software to be installed, couch co-cop/offline friendly all seems to be going out the window.

The biggest thing is they shouldn?t even bother releasing the next consoles unless they can do full backwards compatibility, which means not only should your old discs work, but also whatever you purchased digitally on their stores should be available for redownloading.

Other than that, more dynamics involving physics per game object and environments, along with AI should be the next big technical pushes.

While I've heard of PS5 rumors, I thought we'd been told no more gens. Ever. They're simply refining what is already out there. So a new Xbox in 3547 AD will still play today's games.

This makes me worry about a glut temporarily killing the market. I haven't finished my PS3 library yet.

I hope it lasts atleast a few more years. I'm sure next-gen consoles will once again sell like hotcakes(I don't think PS4 Pro is a good comparison as most people won't replace their PS4 for what accounts to mostly a marginal upgrade for regular PS4 games) but it always takes years before some good games come out. I'd rather they aim a little lower and have a game released late in the existing gen's cycle(when usually the best games get released) then another excruciating slow start of a new console that takes over 3 years to have some decent games released before people start complaining when it's time for this system's successor. I would rather see production costs going down than a new console dominated by EA/Ubi/Activision crap. Which I think is only going to get worse when development budgets increase, yet again.

There are an absolute ton of games released in the mid to lower tier of development budgets but you don't really buy a new console for this; you want to see the cream of the crop when it comes to graphics and production values. With current gen there is finally this momentum of having a steady supply of these kind of hiqh quality games so I atleast hope they keep this going before announcing PS5.

The game industry is dead set to have the current gen to last at least 10 years, even if it means borderline cheating by releasing new more powerful "not-next-gen" consoles like PS4 Pro or XBOXOneX. It's very likely it will reach the mark.

It could last easily 5 more years if Sony/Microsoft are OK with that. It wasn't until the end of 2016 until I finally played an 8+/10 game so the current-gen hasn't even been good for 2 whole years. Also, graphics aren't really even being pushed much anymore. It's not like console gamers are looking over at PC games and seeing a bunch of Crysis type games that they can't play because of dated hardware. It's quite the opposite where the great PC games are actually pushing graphics less than console games like say the Divinity Original Sins and PC games are now on consoles anyway. However, I'm guessing the next consoles will be coming out in 2020 just because.

I firmly believe that we'll stop seeing console generations all together.

After the next Xbox (NeXtBox) and the PS5, im fairly certain that we'll just see incremental upgrades (a la, the PS4 Pro and One X) for the foreseeable future after that.

Then we'll see games that will come out that will have requirements like "Must be played on a PS4 Pro or higher" - kinda like the New 3DS.

Not discounting the possibility, but factually speaking said games do not exist yet.

Oddly, more games seem to have issues on PSPro vs PS4 Regular then the other way around. (And don't try and hook up a terabyte drive to a PSslim).
