I was wondering for a while. What's the exact danger of the Collider, and what can it do except making a black hole or big banging the existence out of it. Only the things it can screw up, not the miracles it can create if it doesn't kill us.

It could create a tiny, tiny black hole that would destroy itself before you could blink. IOW, we're safe.

Erm, it won't really do anything. They're banging one or two particles together at almost light speed. That or finding anti matter. It's not going to destroy the world anytime soon though.

The worst thing it can do is break down after another pigeon shits on a magnet and the tax ? used to repair it would have been spent on health care otherwise. That's about the most dangerous thing it can do.

It doesn't matter. It's for Science!

Science has always been hindered be scaremongers. The man who suggested that microscopic organisoms were causing people to get sick was treated as a lepper.
People don't understand things and try to make it look like the work of "The Devil".

Let's not forget everyone over there has got tenure, so they can waste as many $'s as they want.

Yeah, people have already mentioned, it's not actually going to destroy the world... just that bit of Switzerland where they're based, if anything goes wrong. And let's pray something does go wrong. It'll cost less that way. The massive helium leak might be amusing for a while, though.

It's a scientific breakthrough to actually create the building blocks of our universe! Crashing 2 particles at speeds faster than light, creating a perfect liquid, this is only the first step! Although what would be interesting from a Sociological standpoint is what the religious do with these advancements? Do they condemn them, or accept and use them to strengthen their faith?

Edit: I got a little side-tracked in Scientific Thought Orgasm. I'm pretty sure there are safety features involved if you're dealing with such powerful tools.

It could not discover the Higgs Boson. That's about as dangerous as it gets.

If the Helium leaks they're just gonna put it back in again / get more and put it back in again, I think the most damage the LHC could do is to the Standard Model, but seems unlikely.

Creating a tiny black hole is not that dangerous. You have to remember that gravity is an insanely weak force (when set against nuclear force) so a black hole has to have a certain mass to be able to grow on its own. If they create a minuscule black hole it'll just drop to the core of the Earth and just bob around there for a bit, not really doing much. Only when it has the gravity to overcome its own nuclear force does it start to pose a threat. As in: won't happen...

There is absolutely no risk in utilizing the LHC. The amount of energy "used" during the collisions are not enough to pose a risk of actually creating a black hole. Fear of the LHC stems from misinformation. It's still funny seeing people who are completely uneducated on the subject make claims like such. For fuck's sake people, we could discover the building bloc of the universe. How the hell are people talking more about bullshit claims about the end of the world instead of that?!

well aren't you paranoid about this. there is not a chance in robot hell that a tiny black hole will kill anyone.

i said robot hell since it more fun then theoretical hell. and you know why there is a slide, music, and singing. well that was random

It generates copious amounts of cosmic rays which are completely harmless at the intensity that they're doing.

...what...?

OT: No-one can be 100% sure, as the experiment hasn't been done before.
