How Much (if any) would you reward this person?

So, I was listening to the Radio on the way into work today, and I heard an interesting story. Supposedly (I say that because I'm not entirely certain of the validity of the story) a man won $250,000 at a Casino in New York, then apparently forgot the money in his cab on the way to the airport.

Fail.

However, when the cabbie found it, he turned it in, and the guy got it back.

Awesome, but what about the cabbie. According to the story the guy then tipped the cabbie $2,000.

Does that seem low to anyone else? I don't know about the rest of you, but if I lost that much money, and then someone returned it intact, they'd be leaving with a lot more than <1% of it.

So how about it, escapists? If you had won $250,000, lost it, then got it returned to you, how much, if any would you reward the person who turned it in.

Personally, if it happened to me, the cabbie would walk away with at least $50,000. That'd still leave me with $200,000 more than I would have had if he hadn't turned it in. I say he earned at least a 5th of it.

I think he would get a solid 25K from me. To be honest this story sounds like it was made up on the spot so I dunno what else to say.

Still not sure how true it is, but still.

And apparently it was Vegas, not NY.

still two grand is a lot of money for one night, unless you are a high profile stripper. I'd buy him coffee as well.

I mean he did win the money himself, so he can do whatever he wants with it. Any decent amount of money is enough in my opinion. It's hard to put a number to this kind of thing. If I were the cabby I'd have been happy to get $2,000 for being a good person.

250,000?

50,000 for sure i mean i could have just lost it ALL and this dude could have walked off scott free with it.

I would feel 50k kick in the balls was sufficient for being that stupid, call moron tax.

Spinning this around to the cabbie's perspective for a moment: I wouldn't have expected to recieve fifty grand just for being honest. Two thousand is still enough for a decent holiday, or a buttload of pizza or something.

$2000 is fine. I don't get what the fuss is all about. It was generous to even give him that much. I'd probably have given him the same.

Ehhh... it not like he could of tracked whose cab it was. That cabbie would of been caught eventually. The 2k I think is about right, 25k is a bit much.

Lets put it this way, he expected to get a $15 tip at the most and instead made off with more than 13 times that amount. In his mind he did good.

Or I could just be slowly be turning Republican... some of the thoughts in my head have surprised even me.

I wouldn't have any qualms about giving the guy 25k. Hell, if he hadn't brought it back, I would've had nothing and he would've had 250k, so I think he deserves about that for being honest.

I have to agree, $2000 is a lot of money. I think it's enough for a tip.

I think this story is fake, I don't care how drunk or tired you are. You aren't going to forget 250 thousand dollars.

But that's not what this thread is about. If it was me I'd give him 50 grand of it, because he could of easily kept it for himself.

I'd probably give him 25k. I mean, 2k is still a crap load for a tip but that guy could have easily taken the money.

Sure he could have taken the money, but that's called theft. You shouldn't have to reward people for being honest. Two-thousand is still a lot of money!

Edit: Turns out that I had misunderstood something here so I will see myself out.

OT: I'd tip him 10% of the money found. I would still have plenty of money afterwards. Even if I was on the end receiving 2000 I would still be thrilled since that is almost enough to cover 4 months of rent.

Moot point, as I wouldn't even be able to leave 250k sitting in a car somewhere. No, there is no "well you maybe"s, I would never...
...never...
...never...
...leave 250,000 dollars in a car somewhere. I know the point is a hypothetical, but I can't imagine the scenario. You know that theory of the infinite parallel dimensions based on all possible outcomes? Well, I can safely say that there is no universe in existence in which I leave 250,000 dollars in a cab.

Well, the law here actually states that the finder is supposed to get 10% (33% if the owner isn't found) so I would have given him 25000 at least.
You're legally obligated to give 10% of the money returned to the person returning it?

Communism!
