By some freak event you have become rich. I don't know maybe you struck oil in your backyard or something but that doesn't really matter, what matters is that you now have more money than you know what to do with say $10 000 000 000.

These are my questions:
How much would you give away, if any?
Do you feel it is right that society will expect you to give away a large sum of money?
do you think it is right that your children might be expected to give money to others sheerly because they have it?
and if they don't is it right that they will be viewed as greedy by their peers?

Your turn.

due to epic newbyness (fucked up enter button) i have made me some mirror threads please disregard this one and go to this one http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.156671

I gave 50 quid to children in need. So I am nice.

However, if I suddenly found myself £10,000million in profit, I would give at least £2million to a charity.

I think it is right, it's promoting kindness and giving to the needy in children is always a good plan for me

I would hire an accountant who would advise the best amount to offer to decrease my income tax cost which would reach astonishing levels due to aforementioned wealth increase. As for society and what they perceive is to be expected, I could not care less and I am already cited as a greedy individual because of how highly I value money.

An excellent accountant should reduce the necessary amount to 10% or less.

10 Trillion Dollars?
Yeah, I would totally give a ton of money away. Vast amounts, in fact. And not just to family, either. CRWRC, IJM, Thrive Africa, and plenty more charities would be getting huge contributions.
And I mean huge.

At least a few million each.
I wouldn't want more then a million for myself. That'd do plenty for me right there.
The rest would be charities. I couldn't ever spend that much money by myself, and if I did I'd feel like a complete asshole. Thousands die from starvation and preventable diseases daily, and I'm buying a gold plated F15?
Yeah, no thanks.

I'd give 90% away.

I don't trust charities. I'd probably give it to research into fights against incurable diseases.

If i aquired a very very large sum of money( not 10 billion dollars, pfft thats chump change to what i would want to do) i would do alot of charity. First thing i would make the lazy ass scientists to get off their asses and CURE some funking diseases(they did it with polio they can do it with aids!) also something in the same subject i would invest a lot into stem cell research so they can get shit done(if you disagree with it, think realistically!).
With the money i earn from a cheap cancer cure, i would then start with the problem with starvation in Africa, maybe build a series of canals leading from the ocean to the middle of the continent that brings water to grow crops.
Then i would invest invest into alternative fuels(and i don't mean corn fueled cars, yeah, im going straight to water fueled cars! i know they exist just need to make them more affordable. also need to incorporate more solar power to our homes/ cars)
Once most of use are running on free fuels, I'd go to recovering forests(more trees = less CO2 in atmosphere) plant trees everywhere that's possible.
With no need for oil i would then go political and try to connect the worlds countries in peace. And if they disagree, i go fuckin' roman and just conquer them and convert they're place!(hopefully it won't come to that, but i wouldn't do anything like hitler like kill a shit load of people, i would really try for peace first)
Once the world is at peace and stops fighting each other and can focus on the future, i'd focus on space! going to the moon and colonizing it! then from there it will be easier/faster to get to mars, colonize that, build a big ass telescope and search the stars for more life/ more sustainable planets. and so on...

1. Out of that money? Three quarters.

2. Yes, I do. Society is the collective interests of everyone. In giving away, I feel I am receiving that money again, by virtue of putting it into the world I inhabit.

3. Ditto.

4. Sure is. Why do people need that much money?

I wouldn't give any money to charities because I don't trust them. I don't know what they'd do with the money.

Secondly, they seem to spend most of their money on advertising for others to donate. I understand some commercials on TV and radio may be broadcasted for free, but I know the paper ones aren't. I give money to Help the Aged and used to give to Everychild, and they spent more time sending me junkmail requesting for me to give more money or telling me sob stories of their victims (preaching to the converted) than actually helping.

If I were to give money to charities, I'd probably invest it in private way where I know where it's going and I know who it's benefiting. How I'd do that I don't know.

I do think the uber rich should be giving a heck of a lot more. As Cuddly Tomato states, why do some need so much money? People like Jay Kay who spends millions on flashy cars or expensive homes? Insane.

10 Billion bucks, huh?

Well I'd keep 50 million for myself, family and friends. Then I can work doing whatever I find fun, not worrying about anything else. The rest can go to assorted charities. I think that's reasonable from 10 billion.

I'm gonna cure cancer, damnit!

Either that or I'd spend it all on fixing the world and colonising Mars. Seriously, we need to investigate space colonisation.

i would put enough away to live an awsome life then go through a long boring process of deciding how much to give to diffrent charrites then i would also devide that up so that i have more to give every year (people would probably expect that)

1) I would not EVER give to a random charity. However, if you've ever seen the show "Secret Millionaire," I'd do something similar. If not, I'll explain. Essentially, I'd find a place in society to bury myself and find folks who are doing some actual good in the world and give money to them so that they could get by.
2)Absolutely not. A gift that is asked is not a gift at all.
3)See above.
4)People can have whatever points of view that they wish. A person's reputation often reflect the choices that they made.
