So I just finished Assassins Creed 2, which was great and all, but i felt like roaming around Venice without the obtrusive HUD blocking my view. Soon after that I realized I had just crippled myself and would no longer be able to do any missions or do any of the story over again unless i wanted to turn that mini-map back on. How do you guys think such a thing can be replaced in open world games?

I like mini-maps. They're useful. If you want to replace them though, use a compass thing at the bottom of the screen like in fallout 3 that only indicates the location of enemies, locations, and objectives. It's simple and comprehensive all at once.

How about you bind the hud to an unused button so you can turn it on and off at will, about the only way. I happen to hate games without a mini map that require you to go to the menu to see a map.

Do what they did in Far Cry 2.

Have a map you can bring up, and signs that have names on it and if you're supposed to go there it glows a colour (Maybe some sort of "Animus effect") and you head that way.

I like the map thing though.

What's wrong with mini-maps? I don't find them that visually intrusive and without them I'd be screwed. Maybe a button to turn it off or something would work.

I got it, we could ask the companies if they could take away the mini maps but allow us to buy them as DLC if we wanted them...nah really I don't know I really like my mini maps if anything I like how some games have you press the 'map' button and it has you look at an actual map your character carries for navigation.
