How would you imagine the afterlife of your choosing?

Okay, this topic deserves a little bit of backstory.

My friend and I are in an NJROTC unit, and I'm very much into the military and the armed services. So, we were talking after inspection and she mentioned that she was a Pagan. I picked her brain about it for a while until she had to go, but what she said was interesting to say the least. For starters, you essentially serve as a mortal servant of a patron god from one of any number of ancient religions, and when you die you go to their afterlife, or something like that. Well, I thought to myself, "To hell with those pansy gods of love or crap- if I ever went Pagan, I'd be working for, like, THOR or something."

That got me thinking- just what WOULD Valhalla look like, if I were to imagine it? And thus, I pose a similar question to you- if you had to imagine the afterlife of your religion or of another religion, what would it be like?

For me, I thought of, well, Valhalla- home of the most hardcore asskickers to ever bite the dust. I imagine it as a massive fortress (at least as large as, if not bigger than, West Point), a giant castle-city standing high above a land rife with chaos- a land of forests, rivers, and mountains where the local villages are tormented by the forces of evil (trolls, goblins, dragons, etc.). The great wooden wall surrounding the fortress is decorated with the banners of the gods and the gate leading in is watched by one of the two ravens that constantly inform Odin of what is going on around the world (the two switch off occasionally).

Inside the walls, Valhalla seems, at first, to be nothing short of a massive boot camp for the greatest warriors the world has ever seen. Across the many training grounds tramp armies of mankind's finest, from every corner of the globe. Counted amongst their ranks are Vikings, Spartans, Roman Legionnaires, knights, samurai, ninjas (rare, due to their use of stealth, but still present), pirates and other ship commanders, and numerous others. Even modern-era soldiers are included- Polish GROM, German GSG9, U.S. Marines, Navy SEALS, SAS, the French Foreign Legion, and so on- all of them are warriors who died in battle and accepted the call of the valkyries to train for all eternity in hopes of fighting for the forces of the gods, come Ragnarok. Every day, these men, loosely organized into warbands of anywhere from 10-100 soldiers, fight viciously to hone their skills in combat with all manner of weapons, from battle axes to machine guns and tanks. They make use of the training environments within Valhalla's walls to simulate all the environments they may fight in, from jungles to ruined cities.

Throughout this, the valkyries, the very maidens who chose the soldiers for Odin's army, watch the progress of the warriors as they butcher each other in 'training missions.' Even as the bullets fly, they step through the battlefields unharmed, correcting and criticizing warriors who have misused a weapon or warband leaders who have made a tactical error. The training is harsh, to say the least, but that's expected- only the best can be allowed to fight on the front lines when the armies of Utgard attack the halls of the gods. Therefore, criticism is quick and harsh.

However, when night falls, the dead and wounded from the day's carnage are revived and healed to their full strength. The great masses of warriors go to the great feasting hall at the center of Valhalla, to wile the night away drinking and having fun. They spend this time doing whatever they wish, since they have to blow off steam before they resume training the next day.

Also, occasionally, Odin or one of the other gods will call upon a warband and its members to fulfill some sort of mission in the surrounding area, like wiping out a troll raiding party or slaying a giant.

Note: I don't actually believe this, I just think it would be completely awesome.

It seems you just learned something about the military; that a good number of those serving subscribe to pagan religions instead of your traditional Christian or Jewish stuff. And why not? What does Christianity offer? Clouds.... and pretty much nothing else. No contact with god unless you're section 8 either.

Or you could pledge yourself to a god that does not hold itself above you and be rewarded with what you just described for leading a good life.

Was pretty easy for me.

(please note I'm not completely serious)

Heaven is earth if we live by the moral teachings of prophets instead of believing in crazy shit from fables.

I sadly only subscribe to the belief that when you die, bugger all happens. You just die and it's like being 'unborn', however you can even begin to describe that. Because not existing is unthinkable, it's impossible to even describe what it's like to die without having an 'afterlife', but i honestly believe it's just like when anything else dies - it stops living, there is no fluffy clouds or Valhalla or afterlife.

How would i want afterlife to be? I'd like to be reincarnated as another human being and have another shot at life. There's stuff i want to do, things i want to see. Life is too beautiful to have one cruel glimpse of it and no longer be a part of it. I want to see humanity be equal, i want to see a cure for terminal illness, i want to see incredible technological advancements and space colonisation. I want to see humanity find a way to escape and outlive the inevitable explosion of the Sun.

If there was an afterlife like the Christian heaven, it would be such an incredibly boring and terribly depressing place to be. You can always have too much of a good thing, after all. And knowing humans, we would all miss free will far too much to just give it up so easily, even if it is for 'everlasting peace'. I do not want to give up life for all its many pleasures and vices alike just for the sake of a 'heaven' or 'other afterlife'. You cannot know joy without suffering.

Actually Valhalla is a Norse hall where all the dead warriors (in order to get in you must die with a sword in your hand; old warriors went to sleep like that for fear of not getting in) a) eat and drink b) have sex with all the comely wenches c) fight each other to the death after every feast.

In the morning you are resurrected. Repeat until Ragnarok comes. Then you get to fight in the world's last battle before it is made anew.

And what religion exactly isn't "crazy shit from fables"? I have my holy book(s) and you have yours bro, both are probably pretty crazy.

Hmmm .. an afterlife. I don't know ... now that I think of an afterlife I'd rather not have one. I mean let's take the stereotypical 'Heaven' theme. I mean an eternity of doing whatever you want. In the end what meaning would it have? An eternity with family now passed on? I don't think anybody here would enjoy that <.<

Without the threat of death nothing would feel necessary or dangerous.

I don't know ... I guess the only afterlife I'd want is to ultimately beable to spiritually affect people enough to have me buried with a tree planted ontop of my remains and then disappear into nothingness o.o

I mean I'd disappear happy then. Knowing that I got the burial I wanted o.o

An eternal afterlife :x well it's not really an 'afterlife' is it? It's just stagnation ... waiting around until you eventually forget all that made you human x.x No thanks o.o

Nothingness is preferable ^_^

I don't associate with any religion but I have my thoughts on what happens after death.

I believe we get reincarnated and depending how we lived our life decides what our next one will be. Example: If now you live a life of misery but stick it out and do good things until your time comes naturally then you will be rewarded with a better life next time, but If you are rich, arrogant, and/or un-charitable then your next life will be the life of misery and poverty.

Also I believe karma has a large impact on our lives

My fantasy afterlife is oblivion. Not the the fucking game either. I'm talking end-all-nothingness. Never-existed nobody-even-remembers-you-were-there Oblivion. Pretty relaxing right? Cuz why the fuck would I wanna go through this shit again in different form?

No books are holy, doesn't mean we can't learn good morals from them, I have personally read a few religious texts and found them to all be of a muchness, be nice and the world is a better place, be nasty and the world is a worse place, simple but true.

So yeah, I think people take religion way too seriously, when it was created as a way to show us how to treat each other to be better people

Honestly, I'd simply choose to either continue my life from where I left off or to start over, keeping all of my knowledge from my past life.

Funny, that's how I practice my particular faith. I'm still not sure of the excess stuff, but I'll be damned if the basic moral guidelines aren't the same good stuff you find everywhere.

I would like to be reincarnated into the Star Wars universe. and then keep getting reincarnated into other awesome fantasy worlds. D.C. comics, Marvel Comics, Star Trek, Avatar (both James Cameron's and Nickelodeon), Lord of the Rings, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, DBZ, One Piece, etc.

I personally believe it's the only way any of us will find heaven
IS TO CREATE IT!

I'd totally dig this except for James Cameron's avatar...unless I was blue.

Well I suppose it depends on whether I lived life sinning or doing good things.

If I had a say I suppose a nice heaven (did good things in life) would be nothing but greener pastures, sunshine and a few other people.

If I had a say in hell (a say that doesn't turn suffering into pleasure) it would probably just be darkness, nothing else. No other people, thought, emotion or anything just a never-ending expanse of darkness for all eternity. To me that would be the greatest suffering.

I subscribe to a theory of karmic justice, the world is such an unfair place, I'd like to believe that people get what they have coming. I guess it's sort of a heaven/Hell type thing. Though, it's not the religious ?You don't follow our tenants, you burn? kind. I just like to believe that the good and the evil receive justice.

It's difficult to fully describe.

The afterlife of my choosing is probably a parallel of my current life... but somehow better.
