Back in 2012, Gawker Media Group, Owner of Kotaku, Jezebel, Gizmodo and various other "Media" websites published a sex tape back in 2012, the sex tape featuring Wrestling Superstar, Hulk Hogan.

As it turns out, hosting a sex tap you don't have the rights to do so, isn't something people are very fond of, and as such Hulk Hogan has begun a legal suit against Gawker, to the tune of $100 Million.

Unfortunately for Gawker, it appears that Hogan actually has quite a solid case, and so, a lot of commentators believe this may be quite a smackdown for Gawker Media group, as the company certainly doesn't have a spare $100 Million lying around.

In response, Nick Denton has written an article in response titled "The Cost of Free Journalism" in which he rationalises his choice to publish the sex-tape by claiming that Hogan's openness with discussing his sex life means he was fair game for the release of the tape.

The article can be found here:

I thought this thread was going to be about the Incredible Hulk, now I'm disappointed.

I have a distaste for Gawker just as much as anyone else does, but I don't quite understand gamers' obsession over it. There are far more nefarious corporations out there that could use a stern slap in the face, so why get so worked up over a sleazy press corp?

So what you're saying is "HULK SMASH!" Gawker? Anyway if Hogan dose have a solid case, and he dose end up winning I imagine some jobs would be lost. Where as that would suck for them I don't think anything of value would be lost. I've only been to Kotaku twice, because somebody posted something about a bat shit thing someone said.

I guess some people just feel strong about right and wrong.

And they don't take trouble for very long.

They've got something deep inside of them, and courage is the thing that keeps us free.

Because they're a real American, who Fight for the rights of every man.

...

Sorry.

But, I have no idea. I mean, I don't really get why people would want to go to Gawker, but, I don't get why people would want to go to a lot of other places either.

There's the hot tap, the cold tap, and the much rarer third tap, the sex tap.

If this were to bring down Gawker, I would hope somewhere would pick up the likes of Jason Schreier at least. He does good work in the games industry that barely any other outlet does.

Also I assume the sex tape was just missionary cause he never puts anyone over?

I find it somewhat abhorrent that this is their one test for whether a story should be published or not:

I have a simple editorial litmus test, which is: is it true, and is it interesting?
Outlets like Gawker can have huge impacts on people's lives, the notion that famous people's private lives are public property is absolutely ridiculous. Just because this is their sole publishing criteria, I hope that they go under. This is a philosophy that needs to die

EDIT: Okay, after confirming that this was indeed taken without his permission, I have to ask... where the hell do they get the right to do this? This reminds me strongly of the celebrity nudes that were spread around about a year ago. How is this any different? Is it somehow more just when a news outlet decides to spread a sex tape than an individual?

How dare they try to flag this as a freedom of speech issue

Yeah, it's pretty boring. He just kept no-selling everything she did.

And right before the orgasm, he showed John Cena how it's done and kicked out at two.

Then she ripped off her mask and revealed that it was Vince all along. After which he called for the ref to ring the damned bell, despite Hogan not having come yet.

They really do write themselves.

Must you use the fallacy of relative privation? Sure, corporations like Monsanto cause significantly more problems in the short and long term, but unlike them, Gawker do everything they can to be a thorn in the sides of whoever they're talking about. Also, I'm cheering for Hulkmania to kick some legal ass here, as much as I don't like him.

wouldn't you have to prove damages in the american legal system?
I'm having a hard time thinking that a sex tape caused 100 million dollars worth of defamation for a wrestler that hasn't been relevant for 20 years especially when basically noone would ever watch it.

They own Kotaku. That's why.

EDIT: Also Jezebel.

I hope Hulkamania does run wild in this case.

Really, I guess the biggest question with this whole ordeal is an individual's right to privacy regardless of their state of wealth, but I'd think that should be pretty consistent anyways. And as many have said...who the hell is going to watch a Hulk Hogan sex tape? Unless it really did play out like an actual match.

Well, that and the whole backlash against celebrity nudes thing. Why is it so different for Gawker that they allowed and encouraged this to happen when it comes to Hulk Hogan but not certain other celebrities? Though that answer might be a little obvious to most who keep an eye on that whole awful network. A whole news network built on hits and clicks regardless of ethically obtained and truthful information.

The idea of a Hulk Hogan sex tape still seems way too gross, though.

So did I, but Hulk Hogan is still known to me enough that I get the drift.

OT: Well, if the man thinks he be besmirched, then so be it. LET BATTLE COMMENCE!!
