Human-Alien cross breeding? Possible? Implausible?

Right, I'll do my first topic, probably a bit odd but I'd be interested in the replies.

After seeing the Mass Effect threads in the last few days, and coincidently me playing Mass Effect over again, I've just got past the romance part and thought... could this ever possibly happen?

I'm not talking about Sheppard and Liara being a couple, or if Aliens do exist, it's a question of whether (Alien existence permitting) crossbreeding would actually be even possible? Don't flame yet, just think about how that idea has already been accepted into different streams of media; TV shows, films and games all portray it as possible, yet how could it ever be?
You're talking about 2 entirely different species, which have evolved under different circumstances (Including viral and bacteria differences), but may also reproduce differently (Fish for example, or frogs). Possibly even in a manner/s we have not yet come across or thought about.

Thoughts?

Ohh, and for good measure....
*Grabs door handle, turns..*
*walks down a flight of stairs...*
*Approaches a second door, puts hand on scanner..*
*Continues through door, steps on automatic walkway..*
*Exits walkway, slowly approaches wooden chest...*
*Unlocks clasp.. hands trembling enter the box..*
Out comes, the 'Noob Shield of Anti-Flame' !

Please, nothing is meant to offend any religion in this post, nor for that matter anyone who just has a disbelief of the existence of aliens, I am only asking the opinion of what is in the subject title to others.

It is quite possible. It all depends on the DNA of whatever alien species we find. It may not be likely, but it is possible. Even donkeys and horses can cross-breed. The offspring are not fertile, but it can be done.

1. Why would you want to get freaky with an alien
2. Species can't produce offspring that can reproduce. e.g.the mule and the liger
3. DNA splicing? probably wouldn't work like it does in Sci-Fi films

Well aliens are a different species, and seeing as we can't breed with any other species on Earth at the moment, I can't imagine it being possible.

Definitly possible, in the sense that they could have sex (where theres a will, theres a way).
Probably not so possible in the sense of making babies.

It would be possible (there's nothing to say it wouldn't work, as long as sperm from a male reaches an egg from a female then a child will develop) but there would be the large issue of why would anyone want to? Unless the alien species in question is very sexually appealing (blue women with long flowing hair and six breasts) and non-hostile then it would be unlikely that a human and an alien would do the horizontal monster mash (unless it was rape, although even this would need a certain level of attraction on at least one side).

It would also be the source of great social stigma (you shagged the lizard-girl!? what the hell were you thinking?).

1)I wouldn't, it's the idea being portrayed I was looking to question, not a personal endevour...
2)The species involved evolved under similar climates, or at least have biological experience with microbial life on Earth. Due to the fact I don't know this is an assumption, but are Lions & Tigers not evolutionary forms from other cats, millenia ago? (If not, then I raise the shield once more...)
3)Today? Not a chance. In the future, well probably far off (If at all), to cross two entirely unrelated species and have a positive outcome (No complications for the end result, defects or complications which pose further problems for it).

I don't think that actually having children would be a goal in many cases. As games like mass effect, and other things like Star Trek TOS bring to mind, the most ancient and noble dream of men is to have sex with an alien. That is all.

I's all about DNA man, I think you need close to 90% genetic similarity to cross breed or create a hybrid. But if this situation is ever possible it's most likely that ourselves and future otherworldly baby-mamas would have a scientific way around it.

Oh and in Mass Effect, it wasn't the actual physical act of screwing that caused Liara to become pregnant, but the emotional and spiritual bond. So genetics wouldn't matter when banging an Asari for children.

Completely impossible. If we can't breed with monkeys (and god how we've tried (Silly Nazis)) How likely is it that we could breed with a creature that isn't even from our planet? But the benefit of this is obviously that we can have as much sex with hot aliens as we want and not have to deal with freaky kids.

If yes, then yes.
If no, then we can still genetically engineer something similar to a cross-breed with the alien help.
exactly what I was going to say, except I was going to say 23 chromosome pairs but same thing.

Interbreeding between alien species and humans would be the same as humans breeding with a dog, or dogs and cats, or anything like that. Could it work? Yes. Will it? Likely not.

But humans and aliens wouldn't even be in the same kingdom.

Impossible. For cross-breeding, an alien species would have to be genetically human, or close enough as makes no difference. Ever read the Ringworld books?

That was one of my points, that reproduction for another species may be an entirely new concept, or could be not to dissimilar from other methods we know of (My examples being frogs and fish).
I don't think everyone would disagree with me if I said, someone would want to. Whether it be for attention, to be the first to, or to try something (very) different, some would probably try to...
Socially, well that's possibly linked with the sentence above, and possibly if it was even possible. Considering people get used to changes (With time), I wouldn't doubt if it was possible, it would more than likely occur.

And furries were born...

I had to.

If they had the same number of chromosomes and similar DNA then it's possible and this goes into genetics as well as they'd have to be mammals and I really don't understand why anyone would want to have sex with an alien.

They would be if they were humanoid aliens... right?

The same reason humans want to have sex with elves - they're hot hot HOT!!!

As for the actual thread, highly improbable. They'd need to be close enough in DNA structure to mate with us (like dogs and wolves) which i'm pretty sure means they need to have the same number of chromosomes we do and be mammals. I'm not saying it's impossible, i'm just saying it's unlikely.

Find me an alien, we're testing this NOW.

Oh and another human test subject. I don't wanna boink any aliens.
