I can't think of anything creative, and not too common and I would welcome some REASONABLE suggestions for a main character and about 6-8 sub-characters. English/American names please.
Thx.

Ponder on what your story is about, then go for something meaningful.

Simple example: Ellie Arroway, in Contact - a reference to David Bowman from 2001: A Space Odyssey, as well as a homage to Eleanor Roosevelt and Voltaire (real name François-Marie Arouet)

Complex example: Thomas Anderson (aka Neo) in The Matrix. Anderson means literally "son of man". This refers to Neo's messiah-like condition ("son of man [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Son_of_man]" being Jesus). However, Thomas means "twin", which implies that he is not unique as a savior (which is eventually confirmed). It also refers to "doubting Thomas", meaning it will take until the very end for Neo to believe himself to be the One. You really can have a field day hunting down mythical/metaphysical/philosophical references in The Matrix.

While what Rodrigo said in his post can be interesting, you can hamfist it really easily.

For English/American names which may have meaning but I'm not interested in knowing either way:

Amanda Owens
Elliot Lynch
Tobias Freeman
Karen Mathis

Lara Phano. It was a randomly generated name (on my 10th try or so) for my character in KOTOR 2 that I started a few days ago. I liked it.

http://www.behindthename.com/ The 'Random Renamer' on the left under Fun Stuff lets you randomly generate names and will let you do it by a ton of different cultural subdivisions to suit what ever you need.

All of these are excellent name generators, and invaluable for picking out a character name. Also, I can't recommend enough sitting through the credits of a movie or video game for a bit. Great names there as well.

Think of how the name sounds. short names with plosive sounds, (such as Paul and brad ) suit more violent, brutish characters, whereas more graceful or subtle characters could do with names that have more sylables or an "x" in them or something uncommon. (Jessica, Dexter). Thats what i think anyway.

It all depends on the kind of novel you are writing after all is said and done
