I've just finished playing the demo for the new Devil May Cry and it didn't suck.

I mean, it's cheesy as hell, but in a good way :D

The exchange between Dante and that slug boss thing just made be crack a huge smile. I dunno, maybe that means I have a juvenile sense of humour, but I found it having an air of self parody.

The combat feels satisfying and I really like the idea of having the devil arms mapped to separate shoulder buttons, much less finicky than in older titles.

Although, I do miss the lock on function...

The game looks great, I love the saturation of colours in limbo and I was digging the soundtrack.

Overall, I would say I'm actually looking forward to picking this up, even though they gave 'Vergil' a stupid hat.

[HEADING=3]You can call me Vergil, the hipster douchebag.[/HEADING]

What did you guys think?

How many games in this series now? Five? Six?

You'd think they'd have established by now whether or not that devil is going to cry.

To be perfectly honest, I don't play Capcom games for the story anyway. They're usually insane or downright stupid, while the gameplay is ranging from decent to facking oresome. I've been looking forward to this since it was announced, and the fact that most of the people I know are saying the actual game itself is fun to play just reinforces my resolve.

Here are my thoughts on the DmC demo, I'll self-quote to reduce wall o' text ugliness:

Having played the old games like crazy and coming into this with extreme optimism....

I liked it. I thought it was pretty good.

It did seem like Ninja Theory brought an interesting mix into the existing DMC gameplay format. If there's anything they did an undeniably fantastic job with, it's the aerial combat. There definitely is a large emphasis on it, and it feels great to combo one enemy up into the air, and drag all of his friends up into the air with you Scorpion style. Conversely, while the game does run at 30fps and it does... have an 'impact' on that old feel of the game. It certainly is by no means slow. To me, it feels like Dante can fly around the fight much more smoothly.

Although it seemed like enemy placement was a bit awkward at times. Some of the fighting zones seemed too big for the amount of enemies you were fighting at the time, and the enemies felt too spread out. It made some fights feel a tad lifeless, but thankfully the fights don't drag on very long if you know how to maneuver Dante.
This seemed like a Non-issue in Son of Sparda mode. More enemies, more powerful enemies, more attacking at the same time, including Angel/Demon mode enemies. Some of the fights did get pretty intense.

Switching between his devil and angel arms is hard to get used to, but I see what they're going for. The switching method seams in very well with the pace of combat, and once you get accustomed to the scheme, it feels great to mix in all 3 of Dante's melee weapons together in one massive combo that has him flying all over the place and dragging enemies over large distances to him.
Sure, you could do similar things in the old DMC games with the old control scheme, switching between weapons and have Dante string together crazy combos. But it's not the same. It's different. And it feels pretty good.

The Son of Sparda mode was unexpected kick in the ass. They throw a lot more crap at you, and those Angel/Demon mode enemies are pretty nasty.

Before this demo, I had almost written DmC off entirely in favor of Revengeance. But now I'm considering getting both (Maybe DmC after a price drop.)

I still need to play it more and see how Dante really feels in comparison to old Dante. I've spent so much time with old Dante, I know all of his combos and strings like the back of my hand. Going to this new Dante, the difference between them is huge, and I need more experience to really know he handles. I might see some cracks in the game the more I spend time with it, but my initial impression of it is quite positive.

It still sucks that they capped the framerate at 30 on consoles, and claim the PC version will run at 60. This alone reeks of technical incompetence on NT's behalf, knowing consoles are getting the short end of the stick in this regard is huge for a game like DmC.

Oh, and I did like the music too. At least the brawling music.
The boss music however, sucked.
By now, I've played through the demo's Son of Sparta difficulty too much, and now it's not even that hard anymore. I hope the challenge ramps up a lot later on in the game. The only major 'crack' I see in the gameplay from what the demo shows, is that Dante feels almost TOO strong, even in SoS. Granted, this might be because it's a Demo - And chances are the game will be a lot harder later on in the story. (Still, the boss fight in SoS difficulty is a lot harder than every other fight.)

Although I think it's shitty how NT and Capcom have treated the fans and their reaction towards this game. I think NT is actually doing a fine job with the game itself. I thought they were going to utterly fuck the entire thing, but what they've put together... isn't bad. Dare I say, it's quite good.

I once played a DmC game... and... well... I didn't get it!? :S

I loved the concept... and it looked really great... but I couldn't get over the fact that I had duel pistols with infinite ammo, yet was penalised for trying to use them... unless I had f***ed them up with my massive sword first... yeah... kinda lost the appeal to me after a while! I like hack and slash games, and I like gothic stories, but I just couldn't keep up with a game that only wanted to award me for looking good! :/

Maybe I will try again some time!

Oh gosh, a game that was called out on being shit without any actual basis except the hair (understatement from my side but fuck it, this was really all I remember about the whole situation) turns out to be not shit...

The whole problem was that people whined without having a reason to. No gameplay footage, only a small clip of 'banter' etc were enough to declare the new DMC shit before even playing it. Oh, and hair. Because a normal haircut seems to be emo nowadays.
The hair was something that never bothered me, I mean, I kind of like his new look.

The trailers are what turned me off, with the little context they showed, they were kind of 'meh'.

Seeing a giant putrid slug swearing it's arse off is pretty fucking funny though :D

Oh, I remember that somewhere in a thread you wrote something like that about the hair.

Sadly a big chunk of the news about the new DMC was at first dominated by complains about his hair - more often than not was he called an emo and for someone who has no stakes in the series this somehow stuck in the mind. It may also have helped that the new Dante shares my hairstyle.

Well, I actually started ignoring trailers all together and waiting for games to release because... Well, I was disappointed in many ways of the contrast trailer - game. And then there are games that are just as bad as all the advertisement made it out to be.
Dante's new look is fine.

Vergil's was the one I was getting all butthurt over :D

Hmm? I don't remember ever getting penalized for using your guns. In fact, some enemies can only be damaged by guns.

Also, you don't "Only get awarded" for looking good. Most of your rewards will come from simply killing enemies. Perhaps you got the wrong impression of the series.

I agree. It seemed to me like "THOSE PEOPLE" were forgetting who and what we're talking about here. Capcom, and Devil May Cry. Both are not exactly shining testaments to storytelling, and good writing. Especially in the case of the DMC series, where gameplay was ALWAYS the most important part of it.
I always knew that no matter how skeptical I became of DmC's images and trailers, that it would STILL -like the rest of the series- boil down to Gameplay. And I'd need to play it to form my opinion about it.

Truthfully, I never gave a damn about the 'story' in the DMC franchise. The best it got was during Vergil and Dante's clash in DMC3, and even that was reserved to a few moments in the grand scheme of the game. If DmC's story turns out to be another display of shit. I would yet again, not care. It's the gameplay I'm here for.

....Besides, I get more a Gary Numan vibe from this new Dante.

Nope, not even the mighty Daystar can quench my hatred. Sorry.

And it bugs me that double jump is a thing, rather than air-hike. Least that gave me a magic platform to jump from. It's the little things.

Understandable, given your avatar. As for me, I'm on the PC, so I don't think we get the demo. What we do get is the demo for 4, and I thought that was pretty awesome - especially since it's one of the few games I've played that doesn't mind my controller not being an official Microhard-made Xbox 360 controller.

If we just put our fingers in our ears and chant 'Lalalalalalala' whenever the guy who resembles Vergil is on screen, we should be okay.

I need to get in on this demo at some point but can someone elaborate more on the combat for me? Is there jump cancelling or switch cancelling between styles and weapons? What kind of dodge mechanics do they use? Basically is the combat similar to 3 and 4 or do I have to learn a new system (not complaining if I do)?

EDIT: Tohuvabohu's post was helpful. Thank you.

I think it was good, although not great... It didn't help that the boss fight glitched on me and couldn't finish it.

Me and the boyfriend played the demo the other day and we kinda thought it sucked.

I thought the giant sweary penis bug was kind of funny, but in a laughing-at not laughing-with kind of way.
Combat was kinda clunky too.

Don't really like where they've gone with it.
I won't be one to ***** it out because it's different, but I think I will sit this one out and see where it goes afterwards.

EDIT: OH, and I wanted to add, something about the shape of new-Dante's face really reminds me of the Scout.

I enjoyed the demo, even though I only played through it once and didn't spend anytime mastering the combat system, one slight gripe is there were too much time between enemy fights. But then again it's the first stage so that's to be expected.

I'll pick it up for the 360 when it drops to around half price new, my wallet is gonna be stretched thin for the next 3 months, buying gaming hardware plus Platinum Game's ZOE HD, MGR and Anarchy Remains, plus Under Defeat HD and one or two other shmups.

Not bad or not...I still don't think I'm going to get it. I wish the developers had made an original game. Even if the gameplay was exactly the same...just a different story, different characters...different game.

Fuck sake, dude...I don't think I've laughed so hard in the last few days. That was glorious.
