I Don't Like Final Fantasy, and I Don't Know Why

So, I'm a huge rpg fan. I love how Rpg's work, I love the fact that there's always a way to get stronger and win a boss fight, I love the fact that my character always turns into the way I want to play him, I love everything about Rpgs.

So why did Final Fantasy never tickle my fancy?

Logically, it has everything I'd like. A strong backstory, complex characters, a turn based battle system, a little bit of romance to add some emotional weight to the characters (I can like weird things) but for some reason I never liked it.

And it's nothing wrong with Square Enix, either. I loved Chrono Trigger, I still play it over and over again, I even sort of liked the Last Remnant, but something about Final Fantasy, any Final Fantasy, has never been fun to me.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why. There should be no reason I don't, so why don't I?

Which ones have you played? If you liked Chrono Trigger, I don't know why you wouldn't like Final Fantasy VI, and VII is one of the best RPGs of the Playstation era. X is really good as well.

You are entitled to your opinion, but I commend you for trying to figure out why you have it. I've always thought an opinion isn't worth having if there isn't a reason to have it, so it's good to see someone trying to figure this out rather than just saying, "I don't know" whenever someone asks. My hat is tipped to you.

Anyway... yeah, I'm not sure. It would be helpful to know what other RPGs you liked and which Final Fantasy games you've played. We could figure this out with a bit more information, I'm sure; maybe even get you to enjoy a couple if the reasons are right.

I suppose it is strange to not know what you don't like something.

I don't think that we can answer that question for you, though.

Maybe it's because of unnecessary elements ? One boring, irrelevant, unskippable cutscene can ruin all immersion and love for game. And damn me if these japanesee inventions aren't full of such events. :|

Could just not be your cup of tea. I love shooters but don't like call of duty.

Different strokes.

For me, I can't stand the Dragon Quest combat system. It looks incredibly cheesy to see run up/attack/jump back as somehow an improvement over previous RPGs. And I have no problems with a turn based combat system, but it looks incredibly stupid to me.

The other reason? The fandom who demand 2000 word essays on why I think FF isn't the greatest game franchise in existence.

It's probably just not your thing. All it takes is for something in the mechanics or aesthetics to be slightly off-putting to you and a game that many others like suddenly seems unplayable. Have you tried SMT or Dragon Quest? What about Radiant Historia for the DS?
