I don't see the appeal of 3D in movies.

Recently, I saw Kubo and the Two Strings in theatres. Only way I could see it was in 3D and while I loved the film, it seems the 3D added nothing. I could have seen it without the 3D and enjoyed it just as much. The other films I've seen in 3D are Silent Hill Revelations, The Lego Movie, Minions, Star Wars The Force Awakens and Suicide Squad. While these movies can range from "Excellent" to "Holy Shit Who Greenlit this?" (Looking at you Silent Hill Revelations), I left each one thinking "Why did I need to see that in 3D again?". Not once did I think "The 3D really added to the experience". Is there any film that needs the 3D or is this a dying gimmick?

Often is a gimmick tacked on for it's own sake. If things fly in slow-motion towards the screen, yeah, gimmick.

It can be used well, however, same with anything else. Can make images sharper, for one. Alternatively, in the Dredd film, I'm told they used 3d stuff only from the PoV of people who were high to make things seem different.

Yup, right with ya.

I remember seeing Avatar in both 3D and 2D and preferred the 2D. Then I saw Tron 2.0 in 3D.

Then I never bothered with 3D ever again.

I just find it distracting.

Honestly after Avatar (blame James Cameron for starting the gimmick), I never felt the 3d was justify. Heck I'm pretty certain I got con for the 3D cost while it doesn't look any different (Angry Bird and Finding Dory to named a few examples) but in saying so the local cinema does suck in term of service.

I saw Avatar in 3D and that was enough for me. It's an overpriced gimmick that contributes precious little to the experience. It's certainly not enough to justify the extra cost. It's also awkward to wear a second pair of glasses over my prescription eyewear.

It adds to the price in ticket sales. That's it.

It says a lot that 3D TVs are slowly fading out, to be replaced by 4K and curved.

3D does nothing, but atleast I'm getting to a point where I hardly notice the distraction anymore.

I like it.

Not really anything I can say to people who don't like it.

It's just one of those things.

It's been a dying gimmick for a while now. China really likes it though, and they're a huge film market so it stays alive because of them.

I understand the appeal- "wow, it's like I'm there!"- but it really bothers me because it forces my sight to a single involuntary focal point. This isn't troublesome in 2D projections, but in 3D it almost starts to feel like there's something wrong with my eyes.

As someone who wears glasses and is unable to wear contacts due to overly dry eyes, the 3D glasses they give you are awkward and uncomfortable. Leading me to a headache-nearly-migrane within the first 30 minutes of a movie. When I have to take the 3D glasses off mid movie to give my eyes a rest, then there is something wrong. And yes, I do have the correct prescription in my lenses. I avoid 3D versions of movies like the plague.

The only time I have ever seen 3D used well, is in 3DS games, because it was just used to enhance what you're looking at and add depth. Only Super Mario 3D World used 3D at all effectively though, since many secrets are hard to notice without the 3D on.

The problem with 3D is its rarely if ever used to just enhance the film. They always do that shit where things come at you, and it really hurts the film. Whenever I see films that clearly want you to pay for 3D, I just go "Oh, this is a 3D scene here, cause the bullets or whatever is attacking US!....fucking stupid".

Those panoramic cast shots in Avengers films are those, and they hurt movies I otherwise love.

I honestly prefer 3D in Video Games than movies. Especially Glasses Free 3D like my 3DS.

Heck I would buy a Glasses Free 3D PC Monitor.

I do too. I prefer the depth of the scene vs the "pop-out" stuff. I like that the background actually looks like a background. I may not feel like "I am there" but I do feel like the screen is now a window into the movie, not just a movie on a flat screen.

The only downside is the steeper ticket price. Not too bad for 1 or 2 people but if you are paying for a party, it can add up fast.

I really hate 3D. Annoying pointy-pointy shit and 30% light loss can fuck right off.

The 3D in Dredd was amazing. I'm actually pretty sad I'll probably never experience it again.

That's been the only good use of it I've seen though.

I can understand the theoretical benefits of being able to add a bigger sense of depth to the movie and all that, but my eyes don't seem to focus properly when watching 3D movies, making everything that moves look like a blurry wash, so personally I don't really care about 3D.

And this is why I bought a set of '2D' glasses at the local cinema for two bucks. These are just glasses with only one type of lense in them, so you only see one of the two scenes and can easily be made yourself if you have two 3D glasses.

A bit cumbersome of a solution, maybe, but some movies just don't screen in 2D around here.

I've seen a handful of 3D movies and I haven't really seen how it 'improves' the experience.

The films I saw were great and the 3D was just some gimmick that was utilized in only a few scenes. So yeah, I don't get the appeal and I'd only watch a film in that format if there were no other times and it was on a discounted day.
