I see the appeal, but until we get actual 3 dimensional holographic projection... there isn't any such thing as 3d. It's a camera gimmick that is supposed to produce the illusion of 3d. And it severely limits the quality of the actual image being projected. The glasses required to "see" the 3d effects mute the color of images displayed. It's like watching a normal movie through colored sunglasses. You see the same movie but you miss out on the intended colors. Also, 3d filming destroys focus depth. With a modern digital camera setup, focus depth is effectively infinite. Meaning a crystal clear image at every level. Something you lose as the background images fuzz out when your eyes try to focus on blurry, insubstantial "3d" foreground images that aren't really there.
It was a gimmick, and died in the 50's. It had a revival in the early 80's and died again. It resurged in the 00's, and is dying again. It's a dead end technology that gets a jump-start every time someone supposedly "improves" it. Really it hasn't improved very much at all. Freaking 80's Viewmaster toy technology looks more "3d" than any recent 3d film.
