That gave me a good chuckle.
What is it about being an Indie dev that does that to people?
The same thing that makes the AAA people think they're gods.
For many years now, we've been telling the AAA people that they're essentially gods and can do no wrong and that their games are always always perfect. Fast forward to today, and we've got AAA people complaining about high game prices, but none of the will lower their prices because their games are just so darn special.
What's happening with indie devs now? Pretty much the same thing. Countless people tell them "Your games are perfect and innovative, unlike those damn AAA publishers. Your games are more mature and artful than everything the AAA publishers produce". What's the result? Jenova Chen, maker of Journey, saying games aren't good enough for adults and Braid creator Jonathan Blow saying that most games are juvenile and silly and intellectually lazy.
The simple lesson here is that over praise and over hype are bad for everyone's attitude, including those that are generally good people. We simply need to stop telling them they're perfect. They're good, they may even be great. But nobody on this whole damn earth is perfect.
