What better way to celebrate the new CoC rules than with a new thread?

So, I've bitterly refused to buy the 3DS. Part of the reason is that I was happy with my DS, though I rarely played any games on it.

But the major reason was Fuck 3D. 3D is a gimmick and adds next to nothing to the experience. The only movie I was ever glad that I watched in 3D was My Bloody Valentine. And that's mostly because it was a B Horror movie and the only thing that made it noteworthy or even remotely scary was having sharp pointy things try to hit you in the eye. No other movie that I have ever watched in 3D was made better by the experience, not even Avatar. Plus, I generally find 3D to be more of a nuisance than anything.

Anyway, I had some extra money and figured a 3DS wouldn't be a bad investment at this point, plus it turns out it was on sale for $175. So I bought a red one.

Well, let me start by saying that it is way bigger than I thought it would be. It barely fits in a pocket. And even then it is really obvious in the pocket. Though, that also has the benefit of a larger screen so it is worth it. As for the 3D, my opinion is unchanged. While it is cool that I don't need glasses, I really can't say that it adds anything to the experience. Plus, those moments when I move slightly and end up seeing two of things is borderline nausea inducing. Though it is easy to turn off.

You may be wondering what game(s) I got. I bought Pokemon Omega Ruby. And here is the fun part. It is literally the first Pokemon game I have ever played. So far, I kinda like it. Though, story and characters are basically nonexistent (as I expected). It's mostly okay as long as I don't start asking myself questions like: why did Mom and I move while Dad stayed at his gym in another town?

Needless to say I am now wondering if they are getting a divorce and sending me on a Pokemon adventure so that neither of them has to pay child support. Don't think I don't notice that I'm not getting care packages and money from home. And why wouldn't my father give me any real help before I go off? He just wants me out of his hair!

Anyway, did you buy anything of interest with tax return money? Do you share my opinion of "Fuck 3D"? Got any crazy theories about children's games? Pok-e-man? Recommend me a 3DS game?

Did you buy the XL? Its too big. The 3D, while rarely a must, is mostly dependent on the games. I don't think any of the 3DS Pok?mon games use it well at all. Link Between Worlds is pretty cool with it though. And the DS was waaaaaaaaay more a gimmick than the 3DS. Phantom Hourglass basically sums it up, I only own one after I got a 3DS cause well...Pok?mon (to transfer between generations).

Pok?mon plot is well, crappy usually. Id be 100% for a plotless Pok?mon game where it just puts you into a world and lets you go. Only B/W I think had a decent plot, mostly cause the "villains" make sense...at least until the ending.

Recommended games, well, the 3D updated Ocarina of Time and Starfox 64 are worth it. Majora's Mask depends on if you played it before or not. If you have, don't buy it cause they changed things...and it will mess you up. Mario World is fun for some quickie Mario-ness. Animal Crossing New Leaf if you're into that at all.

You were fighting the same battle I have been, but you lost!

I want to get a 3DS, but I just can't bring myself to spend that kind of money when I doubt I'll use it THAT much. I looked into getting the 2DS, but... it just looks awkward and crappy.

Anyway...

I dunno. Las Vegas and a half dozen hookers (At one of the fine, outstanding, and completely legal Nevada brothels) sounds good too.

I haven't gotten mine back yet. Will probably just bank it for now.

I do.

Link IS Zelda. All the casuals were right!

Pok-e-man?
It's 'Pokemon.'

Recommend me a 3DS game?
No can do.

Buy Smash Bros. This is not a recommendation, this is a command.
You'll thank me later.

I bought a 2DS. Screw 3D. And clamshell.

Anyway, games:
Bravely Default is a brilliant JRPG if you don't mind a bit of boss rushing and dubious sexual politics.
Fire Emblem Awakening is fantastic, and is easily my favourite game for the system.
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is a slow paced hack and slash sometimes let down by bad controls and poorly explained systems, but it's still a hugely rewarding experience. Try different weapons until you find one right for you.

All the above have demos you can try.

Awakening, Senran Kagura, Bravely Default, and Pokemon...

That's all I've bought for my 3DS.

Slight buyer's remorse.

I bought a 2DS first, but then I it began hurting my hands and I can barely fit the thing in my POCKETS!!!!!!

So I bought the first original model.

Than I bought a New 3DS XL because of the extra control stick and the fact that the specs have increased on the New 3DS.

Because of the exlusion of the use of 3D Glasses.

I truly believe in this glasses free 3D concept.

I hope to get a PC monitor that supports 4K and Glasses Free 3D in the future.

Had to double check, and I did get the XL.

I've heard as much. I still don't like 3D on principle. The main reason I got a 3DS as opposed to a 2DS was those few games that might need it.

I have to respectfully disagree. I found the DS dual screens and touch-pad to be very useful. Even playing Chrono Trigger on the DS was great simply because the touch-pad made inputting commands a breeze.

The "plot" seems to exist mostly to tell you where to go next to catch Pokemon and battle gym leaders honestly. It would be difficult to throw you into an open world and not give some minor direction. So it works for what it does.

Star Fox 64 is definitely on my short list. I never had a N64 and always wanted to play it. I'll keep the others in mind.

Next time. You're buying.

Most of it went to pay off the credit card debt I had from buying a new refrigerator since mine broke down last Thanksgiving. I wanted to spend at least some of it on me. Otherwise I would have probably left the vast majority of it in the bank, too.

I bought a chair with my tax return. A solid, neat looking chair. I was sick of using office chairs that had no head support and made my back ache after an hour or so. I have a bad back in the first place, so using crappy chairs was a horrible experience.

I went with the DX Racer. Yeah, yeah, "Ugh, you bought a "gaming chair"? You should have just bought this one from Ikea because blafjiejifjaiw jawefio." Fuck you. It looks neat and it's surprisingly comfortable. And it's perfect, since it can be adjusted any amount forward or backward (anywhere from less than 90 degrees to a full 180 degrees flat) and locks into place there.

As for the 3D option on the 3DS, yeah, I wasn't interested. I used it maybe...three times after I bought it? It was certainly a nice effect for a couple minutes, but I'll never play a game with it on permanently, or even for any amount of time over 30 seconds. It always makes games choppy and it's hardly worth the eye-strain.

I was originally going for the 2DS, but like most people, I hated the look of it. I'm not a huge fan of clampshell designs either, but it looks way nicer and helps protect the screen from debris.

And it's size was hardly an issue for me. I carry a messenger bag with me most of the time anyway, and it sits there perfectly. I hardly ever trust myself to carry anything in my pocket other than my wallet, I'll even opt to have my cellphone in my hoodie pocket or in my bag. (I have large thighs anyway)

I'd definitely recommend the Etrian Odyssey series. Create a team of up to 5 characters from varied classes, explore a dungeon in first person, random turn-based battles, and, or course, the FOEs.
EO4 (demo) can be found on the eShop, as well as "Untold" version of EO1 and EO2.
EO5 is in reportedly in final stages of development, though it's unknown when it will be released, let alone localized for the West.

Also, there's the Rune Factory series. Harvest Moon's RPG'ing/hack-n-slashing cousin.

I've been thinking about getting one. But I haven't even had the original DS, so I am scared to death by all the games I would be able to finally play, but then again there is too little time and too many games to get one. I would destroy myself, with gaming, if I'd buy one -.-

A lot of stuff
It wasn't until games got over the DS's stuff that it started using its features well. 3DS doesn't have that issue. Using the touch screen for easy menus is good. Using the touch screen as your only means of movement is not.

Pok?mon games are usually the most fun after the plot is done, when you can go around exploring freely to get the stuff you missed. The gym and league stuff is fine, but the actual plot stuff, like Team Flare trying to wipe out most of humanity, but unwilling to kill some annoying kid, is kinda dumb. Atleast Plasma (Black/Whites antagonists) were believable since they weren't evil, just misguided. The main villain does go over the top though and is lame, but whatever.

3D is best when it enhances the experience, which I feel the 3DS does. Mario 3D world even uses it to make the game easier, since some hidden areas and stuff are hard to see without it. When stuff comes at the screen cause its 3D...that's the issue. Once movies understand it, 3D will stop being a gimmick.

The XL is still too small for me to play comfortably. The regular model's so tiny in my hands my index fingers overlap in a natural resting position and I need to make weird claw contortions in order to operate the L and R buttons. And the D-pad. I love my 3DS, but can't play it for more than like five minutes at a time without my left hand knotting up into a ball of pain.

...then again, I'm also big enough that the 3DS fits comfortably in almost any pocket I have, so that may not have been such an issue for the OP. But I guess my point is that it really depends on who you are. My mom thinks a normal iPhone is too big. I've got a LG G4 and operate it one-handed all the time. The worst part about this sort of thing is it can be hard to eyeball what's going to be comfortable. And you can't exactly stick a store model in your pocket.

Also, I will never use the 3D unless forced. Thankfully, only a couple of games make this an issue.

I have the tiny hands D:

I think we just need options. Its why I hated that the new 3DS only released in XL in the US at first. They fixed that now though. I also remember when the S controller for the original Xbox came out, and I was thrilled, but my dad always preferred the first ones cause they fit his hands better. I wish we had more size choices more often, at least a big and small, though as I said, I have smaller than usual hands, so even still a lot of controllers are a tad too big.
