I was out looking around my favorite used item shops and I found a Dreamcast that I decided to buy. Does anyone have any non obvious game recommendations for me?

The only game that I found that was not sports that I knew would be a good test was Rainbow Six, and now when I look around out and about or online I will be searching for the usual suspects, SoulCalibur, Sonic, Shenmue and the like. Though I would like some leads on good stuff that is not as talked about.

Well, okay, these are going to be a trio of racing games that I myself played on N64. But they had Dreamcast versions, and they probably had better graphics and sound on the DC.

First up, the Midway arcade boat racer, Hydro Thunder. Wild boat designs, insane courses with shortcuts and massive jumps, it's a high-speed thrillride from start to finish.

San Francisco Rush 2049, the last of the Rush games. A 90s arcade game through and through, one of the last of its kind before arcade racers like that began to die off. Race through a futuristic San Francisco and weave your way through insane shortcuts with huge jumps.

Star Wars: Episode 1: Racer is here for being a solid futuristic racer where you build your way up from the lowest of circuits all the way up to competing in the biggest races in the galaxy. Buy upgrades to your machine between races or you'll get left in the dust.

If you like unconventional fighting games, give Heavy Metal: Geomatrix a shot. It isn?t well-balanced, but it is fun, especially if you like the esthetics. All the art was done by famous comic artist Simon Bisley, and the soundtrack is all hardcore/industrial/metal. You?ll love it or hate it, but it is unique.

Also, I heartily second the recommendation for Star Wars: Episode 1 Racer. Even if you played the N64 version, the Dreamcast version is arcade-perfect and then some.

Power Stone was a great little arena fighter. I played a lot of Virtua Tennis too, back in the day. Surprisingly fun game to play with friends. And Crazy Taxi. Hard to forget a classic like that. Plus the soundtrack featured two of my favorite youth SoCal punk bands: the Offspring and Bad Religion.

Other ones I remember: Dynamite Cop. Ridiculous brawler where you could use massive baguettes as weapons.

I also sunk an upsetting amount of time into Phatasy Star Online despite never actually playing it online. I remember loving it until I got to this one escort quest where your weakling escort kept getting killed. I must have replayed it a dozen times to no avail. And thus began a lifelong hatred of escort quests. Still, fun precursor to our current MMOs.

And let us not forget Jet Grind Radio. Strange game set in future Tokyo where the goal is to spray grafitti all over your rival gang's terf and not get the crap kicked out of you by the cops. It had one of the most killer soundtracks I ever heard. Must have for any DC owner.

Sega Marine Fishing, if you can find the pole peripheral.

No, seriously.

It's actually a fun little casual romp, and much more addictive than it sounds.

If you have a group of friends to play with, Powerstone is great. I mostly played the 2nd game with my friends.

Rush 2049 is another game we played heaps of. I personally hate racing games, but this featured a stunt and battle mode which I enjoyed.

You can always see some new released games which are still compatible with Dreamcast.
Sadly the most I know which are new are Shmup games and one Metal Slug clone....

If you can find it, Skies of Arcadia is a great JRPG but I have a feeling that it might be a bit pricey now.

There are only two options:

Berserk
Basically a proto-dark souls. It features a script and art work from the creator himself. The best Berserk game by far.

And whatever this is

Just as an aside, and obviously I'd never condone this, you don't really have to buy any dreamcast games. There is an easy way to find any and all games online and put them on cds that will work perfectly in dreamcasts. Not that I'd ever I'd do it or suggest you did it, obviously. Just a bit of trivia.

This doesn?t work for a lot of games, as DC discs were capable of holding 1GB of data, so some games end up missing content, like Street Fighter III missing four fighters, which makes arcade mode not work.

None were much over 900mb and you can get special 900mb cds for those ones and use overburn. Trust me. ;)

Thanks everyone, it has been interesting to look up a lot of these games. I knew that Sega made its name on Arcade ports or Arcade style games and that the Dreamcast had many, so that will be great as the semester starts up again.

The racing games especially bring back a nostalgic feel for me as the Dreamcast power allows them to resemble the PC version of the old Need For Speed games that I grew up with, also I think there was a stock engine noise a lot of games used because in a video of Rush 2049 I swear I have heard that sound before but I had never seen or played that game before.

I cannot tell if it is 80's in the most 90's way possible, or 90's in the most 80's way possible but I am sold just on the intro video. Also V8 engine machine gun.

I just thought of a couple more, both slightly off-beat racers. Wacky Races is visually and audio-wise amazing, and the gameplay is fun, aside from the ball-busting difficulty. Not just rubber-banding, but computer-controlled racers just being incredibly dickish as well. The other one is Walt Disney World Magical Racing Quest, a kart-racer where you use different vehicles to race through various rides and attractions at Disney World. The only recognizable character is Jimmy Cricket, the graphics are fairly simple, with the game being a PS1 port, but the courses are awesome with a cool shortcut system, the speed is great, and it never misses a beat, even in four-player splitscreen!

I can't believe no one has mentioned Lodoss War. I still think its the best RPG I have ever played.

I even kept a notebook trying to collect all the armor sets.
