I need a free server for me and my friend for minecraft. I've looked everywhere on how to do it but I just cant seem to get the right stuff for it. I don't really know how to go about it. Would setting up a server for 2 people be easier than setting one up for 20? Thanks in advance

You can get the server software at minecraft.net/download

You can find instructions on running the server at minecraftwiki.net

You will need to port forward a port on your router if your friend is not on your LAN, but it's easy to set up.

My friend set mine up, using the basic server software found on the Minecraft site and Hamachi.

warning to all: Oh god, please do not use Hamachi. Find a guide online on port forwarding. With a guide, it becomes easy, and hamachi is terrible!

Note: this is not a slur against your friend, I just want to warn people away from hamachi to make everybody's life easier.

Hamachi with Bukkit is incredibly easy to setup and use. Took 2 hours for me and my friend to give up on port forwarding, 5 minutes to get into minecraft with Hamachi (4 minutes of that were downloading). Dunno what your issue with the program is, but it is much easier than changing your routers settings.

O/T a guide for setting up a server can be found here
