Hmm, I just realised I posted this exact thing on the forum back in August - It's the exact wording and everything. Why have you copy and pasted my thread from ages ago? Very odd. I didn't get a response from it at the time, I guess because it's not the kind of thing you usually post on the Escapist - http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.1007047-I-just-watched-the-ending-to-six-feet-under-for-the-first-time-and-I-cried. Is this some sort of spammer?
Anyway, irrespective, it gives me a chance to talk about it because I did like it a lot.
Yeah felt the same way when I watched it. I remember I lay awake thinking about it that night. I think the reason it works so powerfully isn't just because of the characters (although it helps because you've spent so long with them over 5 seasons).
It's a similar take home message to Alan's Ball's other big hit, American Beauty - life is short and quite beautiful but we are all too caught up in our stuff to notice usually. Only facing the realities of death head on encourages us to live life to the fullest while you still can and notice that's it's a bit of a miracle we are here at all, really. That's the subtext of why people are so moved by it, I think. But yeah, great ending.
I think Alan Ball is quite a spiritual sort of person. He'a said before that "a lot of my spiritual awakening has involved tragedy, has involved experimentation with different experiences, drug experiences: sexual experiences, drug experiences. I have to be real honest and say those experiences have contributed to my spiritually."
