As it says in the title, I love gaming but I am just bad at it. I mostly stick to 4X, Strategy type games and I always seem to think I am doing well but I end up being bad at it. In Civilizations games I go broke if I expand too quickly. Even when I have tons of cottages I am still losing money. In Online gaming I seem to die a lot or get killed. I often think that I am good at games but I am actually pretty bad at them. In League of Legend I will often die a lot and never get any kills. I was wondering what do I do to improve my skills?

Does it really matter? Games are meant to be fun. If you're having fun despite being 'bad' then what's the problem? Don't forget there are a lot of people who live, eat and breathe a particular game(s) to a disturbing degree and you're unlikely to win against them anyway. Then there are the cheaters.

And you think going broke in Civ is bad? I keep messing up my demesne size in CK2 and I just like to pretend it's because my ruler has a crazy person trait (but really I just got greedy). Ah well, let the heirs sort that out! And don't ever, ever go female ruler plus Basque in a non-Basque country. That one went sour quickly >.>

I wouldn't worry about that one too much. Civilisation-building games and RTSes are a couple of the hardest genres, in general, to actually be good at.

I think part of the problem is that sand box games and RTS, despite claiming to be all about freedom and choice, have ONE very specific way to play.
And if that's not how you play, then you're shit out of luck.

I disagree . At some point when you are bad you are just going to stop doing it. Especially if you know you are bad. It's why most people stick to genres they are decent or good at and let the genres they are bad at at the wayside. If someone is bad at all games, they will most likely drop gaming all together.

To improve more, practice. They say it takes ten thousand hours of doing a thing to get good at it.

If you want to learn how to do better at civ read up others strategies, you kind of sound like me with your love of expansion, it took me a long time to realise in 4X games that whilst expansion makes you powerful end game its often risky because spending all your early resources on expansion makes you vulnerable to early game rushes.

I know a lot of people who love things they suck at. It's really not that much of an issue unless you're really trying to be competitive about it. I consider myself better than average, but I don't expect to ever seen the pro scene of any competitive game.

My oldest brother is tragic at gaming. He loves them, but everything required to make a good gamer, he lacks. There's nothing really wrong with it. It's good that he's accepted it as part of his sense of humour. He'll happily joke about being a ball & chain to the team. It's good spirits.

A lot of it might just be practice or just your general way of thinking, though. Some people have trouble reflecting on the chain of events. It's easy to see what's going wrong, but figuring out why it happened is another skill. Pick something you've done poorly and keep asking why until you figure out where your error was. Improving can be like a science in this regard. Or even a game in itself. :)

there is absolutely nothing wrong with being "bad" at games, as long as you're having fun then game away good sir/madam. If you have the time, there are plenty of *good* lets plays on youtube of civilization games (whichever one you are playing) and I guarantee you'll notice some things the person is doing that you AREN'T doing, just by watching one guy in one video, I went from playing average on king to whooping ass on emperor difficulty.

your luxury resources, are you trading them to other civ players? it seems like the CPU players gobble them up like fat kids on candy, so look up how much they are worth (probably a civilization wiki or such) and sell them on the " X gold per turn" basis, it'll make sure your civ isn't broke out its ass so you can keep your armies pushing forward and keep your cities growing, this was one huge thing I wasn't doing like I should have.

Also, try and decide what you want to DO with each city (generally by looking at what resources are on the land tiles around it, what would the city be strongest at?) right when you are getting started with it and commit to it, it'll make your empire alot stronger in the long run.

Play, play, play is the only way to get good. If you don't improve, whatevs. Contrary to progressive opinion, there have always been a plethora of games that don't require a lot of skill to play.

As others have states, you can be shit awful at a game, but as long as you enjoy it, keep playing. You'll get better, practice makes perfect, right?

Good games are designed to be easy to learn, yet difficult to master. If you really want to master them, then observe where you went wrong, and do some research to achieve goals you set out for yourself. XCOM's Long War mod is a good example of you needing to do quite a bit of research to get anywhere in that. 4X is also a good example. Take some time to learn and fully understand the mechanics and choices. Find what choices you like to play the most, and then choose a civilization that complements those choices. I like having a few cities. More fun to have a central home base that can churn everything out fast. I often play as India, and have something like 5-6 cities.

Do I win? Fuck no. I'm bad at 4X too. But it's a fun ride. :3

Did you expect much more in this thread other than people telling you "git gud" in 7 different ways?

To be fair, if he's looking to git gud at League, i'll save him the hours and hours of guide videos and tips from how to boost your rank in Solo Queue. In essence, "GET GOOD AND CARRY!" boom. I just saved the OP so much time cuz that's the only thing all of the advice boils down too.

I partly agree about being bad is ok if you're having fun. Only partly because I fuckin' love BlazBlue. I do, i'll spend entire evenings playing Based Girl Mu-12 but I don't play it as much now, not exactly because i'm bad (I am) but because I find it impossible to improve. Anyone who tells you that every loss makes you a better player has clearly never been locked into a corner and instakilled in almost every game because the only people who play online now are the hardcore dedicated 1000PSR guys who play either Jin, Ragna, Hakumen, Tager or sometimes Lambda-11 and know the ins and outs of their character *and* how to perform that character optimally in any matchup. Not to mention if you find that one guy who is so fucking good with Taokaka. Nobody plays her because she's so hard to use but deep down, every single person who's picked up BB for any decent amount of time secretly wants to be that guy who just wrecks face with Tao.

To be clear, the only way I win is through them trying to style me too hard. Fuckin' Hakumen Astral spamming me when i've switched to pure Keepaway projectile spamming tactics, get the fuck out of here. I even started to play Hazama just to try to pick up his hilariously trolly fighting style and personality. Now I can get fucking bodied and still have fun because Hazama is so much fun to use.

Watch gameplay videos and study what those players are doing. That's what I usually do when I'm not sure how things control or how certain game mechanics work. I'm sure you can find plenty of how-to videos for Civilization and League of Legends on YouTube. Good luck.

You're not alone there. I used to be rather competitive in FPS shooters back in the day, now I still play them on at least Hard difficulty first time round, and have a blast. However, it seems more and more like the type of games that I enjoy, or *want* to enjoy the most are presenting the steepest curve for me. Right now it's racing sims, and in recent years, fighting games. I've followed racing sims almost all my life, and even started hobby-building chassis/rigs to play them since about 10 years ago.

However, these days I'm finding it really hard to maintain any kind of competitive edge, even against AI, which makes one avid fan feel rather stupid, believe me. See, the thing is usually with enough hours I kind of "click", where exactly I'm going wrong, and it's usually attributed to something fundamental, either in my approach, or something to do with the physics of that particular game (braking too long, too early, not turning in enough, etc). But nowadays, there's no "click", it's just trying and falling further and further behind the pack. Sucks!

I also support sucking at games.

I'm an avid gamer and there are genres I excel at and then ones that I suck at. I don't care enough to master FPS games or fighting games, but I love to play them so I will. As long as you're having fun and aren't trying to play at a pro level to the detriment of teammates, then just enjoy it.

Cheat.. Well cheat at civ. (the other games you shouldn't cheat at because you know unfair to the other players.) That is what I do in my x4 games. I have a cheat mod for civ 5, so when I need to I can pull my game out of the fire to keep playing. (I kind of wish x4 games would do away with the whole win lose aspect. They don't really need it.)

Well, one thing that made me better at civ was playing it for hundreds upon hundreds of hours. I'm still not great at it but I can beat the civ 5 emperor AI with relative ease by now. And the civ 4 monarch AI at least feels a bit threathened by me. Another thing that might work is play different kinds of games until you find something you are good at. I did the same thing with halo: CE. I am at least relatively good at frozen synapse and imperial. Not sure why those games particularly but since I've played hundreds of different games there had to be something I was good at. You might not be willing or able to spend that amount of time on games in which case I can't help you because I am ussually not great at them either.
