That Playstation 3's still play ps1 games even though they do not play ps2. If you already knew this good for you but I just learnt after giving my younger cousin my favourite Final Fantasy.

The early PS3s (the fat looking ones) can still play Playstation 2 games.
PS2 backwards compatibility was removed in the subsequent (slim) PS3 models to cut down on production cost.
Trust me, we know. The internet exploded in rage and confusion when they decided remove it four or so years ago.
But they started to turn a profit off of the triple after that, so I guess it worked out for 'em.

Try playing FFVIII on it it probably wont work at least for me it dosent. Every other PS1 and PS2 game I have tried works on the PS3 but it wont play FFVIII which was weird.

Not thats it was a big deal I just played it on the PS2 instead.

I'm sure I remember playing FFVIII on my PS3, but I just Googled it and apparently a lot of people had the same problem as you. I'll have to try it again, see if I'm not just imagining things.

OT: I've noticed a lot of people seem to believe the PS3 ditched PS1 compatibility. I used play PS1 games on it quite often, before my brother took the PS3 back :[ Ah well, I have both a PS2 and a PS1 here so I'm good.

Thats what I thought that there was no backwards compatibility at all.

You can get ps2's dirt cheap nowadays anyway. I'll be buying a ps3 when the ps4 is out the ps3 prices have plummeted.

Some PS1 games still won't work, though. I tried playing Tomb Raider 1 on mine, and while it can load and lets me play the tutorial level, I only get a black screen when trying to access the main game. Apparently it's a known issue.

Still, I have my trusty PS2 that will happily let me play it.

I guess some backward compatibility is better than NO backward compatibility, which seems to be the direction where the next gen is heading. I'm going to defend my PS2's lifespan to the death.

I've known this for a while and it kind of confused me...will this mean that the PS4 will also play PSX discs? Or even PS2 discs?! Probably not for both but this is still pretty cool.

Not.
This is actually pretty common knowledge.
What is good to know is that the PS3s honor the region coding on PSOne games.
(so sadly no import pleasure)

In that same vein the PS2 also had backwards compat for PSX. However if I am not mistaken, it is still of greater benefit to backwards compat a PSX game via the PS2 instead of the PS3. The PS2 backwards compat had a few additional "graphical enhancements" with their BC and it did things like increased texture resolutions/complexity that made them look decidedly better than their native PSX format, which again unless I am mistaken is the ONLY way of BC PSX games on PS3, in their original native retinal shredding jaggy glory.
